He lived the way everyone else did until he met Clarisse and she made him realize that his happiness wasn't real it was just for show. Their society does not recognize imperfections and also does not appreciate anything independent. The society prefers “only wax moon faces, poreless, hairless, expressionless.” This means that their society prefers everyone to be the same and not to stand out or point out problems. “Pores” are things that stand out from the smooth.
