- El término fotomontaje se inventó en el grupo Dadá de Berlín, en Alemania. Mucho del trabajo dadaísta fue colaborativo, así que varios miembros de este grupo reclaman la atribución de la palabra fotomontaje.
- La versión oficial es que cinco exponentes de Dadá trabajaron la nueva forma de montaje fotográfico entre 1916 y 1918: John Heartfield, George Grosz, Hannah Höch, Raoul Hausmann y Johannes Baader.
