Because the fence that is holding the birds captive is only the birds themselves, it’s illustrating how the birds are only trapped by nothing but themselves and when they finally decide to break free is when they will be released from this prison. With the depiction of the birds flying away from the fence, breaking from the cage that has been holding them and the rest of the birds still clasping onto each other, staying behind in confinement, the image’s theme seems to be surrounding human will, freedom, self-confinement, etc. 
Its connections to Song of Solomon can be directed back to the image of Mr. Robert Smith ‘flying’ off the Mercy building. It’s similar because though Mr. Smith did not succeed in doing what he hoped to, to fly away, he did not show any kind of remorse, but rather relief. Mr. Smith had either gather up enough courage to ‘fly’ away or he has had enough of being trapped, like the birds.

The image conveys a theme of entrapment or feeling out of control.  It is connected to the texts because in milkman's community many people feel pulled towards death, as shown by the number of people who have threatened or committed suicide. Being a religious community (as made clear by their prayers and exclamations) as well as the biblical themes in the text as a whole, the fact that the girl is suspended in the sky is tied to the text because of religious ideas of heaven and its connections to clouds and angels. It’s as if the birds are escaping from this trapped feeling inside the mind of this person, which is similar to the idea of flying away from your problems to freedom that the characters deal with as a theme in the novel. Robert Smith for example, wants to be something more than he is because he feels confined by the laws of society, and that he is not successful. He tries to literally fly away from this state of mind, jumping off a building which is very interesting when compared to this image of birds flying off these buildings as if they are escaping to a better place.

The photo plays with this idea of flight, and birds which is prominently noted through the first 2 chapters after Milkman realizes we cannot fly and life is not always a fantasy, or  when Mr.Smith attempts to commit suicide and uses language of flying away in relation to a bird within his note. The birds flying out of the man’s head also show the escape from one’s mind, and in turn the reality which the mind manifests for itself. This is the reality which everyone in the story is trying to escape, whether it is their life, reality of their trauma, or reality of their circumstances, everyone is trying to escape in some way or another.
