The story begins when Ram meets Fraser on the street when he was looking for a place to stay. Fraser offered Ram a place to go but stated that in order to live there he would have to pretend to be Indian. Ram objects at first but goes to the place and does his best to fool the landlord. Ram gets the place but faces conflict with one of the other the other tenants, Chan. Chan happens to be the only other "Indian" in the building and made Ram feel threatened about his spot in the building. Since Chan lived next door, it was hard for him to keep constantly pretending. Ram went down to the landlord and told him lies about Chan to get him kicked out. The next day, the landlord kicks out Ram because Chan has told him that he had been lying about being Indian. Ram ends up back on the street and runs into Fraser. Ram complains about everything that happened and discovers that Chan was also from the West Indies and was sent to the building by Fraser.

Samuel Selvon, the author of "When Greek Meets Greek", was born in the West Indies. He first began making Carribean magazines in the Royal Navy Reserve during WWII. In 1950 he moved to England and became a writer. His experiences were evident in his writing because the characters, Ram and Chan, were from the West Indies but faked to be Indian in order to have a place to live. Selvon used his birthplace and where he moved in order to make a story that reflects his life experiences.

While reading this text we studied dialect and character development. Dialect was used throughout the story to show the background of the characters, and was mixed with character development as well. We saw a lot of character development throughout the story, especially with Ram. Ram originally acted as himself, then faked being Indian to live in the apartment, then to trying to get Chan kicked out so he wasn't exposed, and finally getting exposed for faking and getting kicked out.

When Greek Meets Greek, shows the influence of being from a different country in England. The landlord neglected to take anyone from the West indies but was all for taking Indians. The text includes two characters from the West Indies (one being the main) and shows how they were forced to sway away from their cultural in order to find a place to live.

The overarching ideas of this unit are relationships and dealing with troubling emotions. How are these present in the text and what might the text be saying about each of those ideas?

This text has relationships that are hard to maintain and this is because of predetermined opinions about a person/group of people. In the text Fraser reveals he knows "a landlord up the road who vow that he ain't ever taking anybody who come from the West Indies". Ram then goes to live under the landlord, but has to fake who he truly is because the landlord doesn't like his people. Ram had to deal with troublesome emotions, such as fear of getting found out because of Chan appearing to be a true Indian. This was a struggle and lead to Ram getting exposed for faking, and eventually kicked out.
