I am in third grade for practicum and they are behind because of covid so they are still working on sounding words out to spell. Also, they ask Siri how to spell things if they get frustrated writing. My teacher is not teaching spelling explicitly.</div>]]></description>

Usually our homework included having to submit 2-3 different examples of how we practiced (practice tests, word searches, word games, etc.). We never really went over the words or anything, it was our job when we went home to basically learn to spell.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I don’t remember how I was taught spelling. I feel like flash cards were involved somehow. In my Practicum, students learn to spell by first doing word sorts, and then practicing saying and writing the words. Then eventually they can practice spelling without looking at the words first because they learned the patterns. Every week or so they complete a spelling test and get a new set of words with a new pattern to work on.&nbsp;<br>-Megan</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I was taught spelling through spelling tests (from what i can remember) and writing words on worksheets that had us write them over and over.&nbsp;<br>I haven’t seen spelling be taught in my classroom yet. Other than when i gave the Words Their Way Assessment, my students haven’t practiced spelling. Usually when they don’t know how to spell a word they just ask me or my cooperating teacher and either are asked to sound it out or break it up, or just told how to spell it.&nbsp;<br>Sheridon Buehler </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Growing up I was never really taught an strategies for spelling, it was all just memorization. We were given a list of words at the beginning of every week and at the end of the week we had a spelling test. We sometimes played games like sparkle, but it was mostly just memorizing outside of school. At my practicum, they have phonics time everyday and learn about patterns in words. During their specific writing time, they do not really have any spelling instruction. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I was taught spelling by participating in weekly spelling tests, as well as playing spelling games such as Sparkle. Spelling basically started and ended with the spelling tests. There was an opportunity for a spelling bee in 6th grade! Spelling is being taught in a similar way in my practicum - a “word study” where students dive into 5 words and choose those as their spelling test words.&nbsp;-Jadyn</div>]]></description>

We would get the spelling list on Monday and had to memorize all the words by Friday.&nbsp;<br><br>At my practicum, we try to encourage spelling by sounding out the word. There is no explicit instruction time where we go over spelling words. Most of the time the students just ask the teachers to spell is out for them and don’t  try to do it themselves. </div>]]></description>

Sometimes this words would be in readings of pop up throughout lessons but not always. In my practicum we have yet to have spelling work the only spelling was the words their way assessment that I had the students do.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I remember getting spelling words each week and having a test each Friday. I don’t remember practicing them in school, but my parents would have me do activities with the words each night of the week to be ready for the test. I also do not remember learning phonics in my younger grades.&nbsp;<br>My students now also get words each week for them to practice and my teacher did a pre assessment and the words they get are at their level and they get a spelling partner. She implements time everyday for the student and their partner to do a practice activity and then there is a test on Fridays. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I was taught spelling by writing repetitively to remember the word and using it in sentences so I understood the meaning. I just remember sitting in my kitchen rewriting each word 10 times so I could remember how to spell it for the test.&nbsp;<br><br>For my practicum, they are given the words and have to start by re writing them 10 times in their workshop packet. Then they get a spelling choice activity where they can write the words colorfully, draw a picture and hide the words in it, create a story using all the words, etc. Overall, they learn through repetition.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I remember that we would have the words written at the top of the page. Then many lines/boxes underneath where we would just have to write the words about 10 times each. It was very much so a memorization event. We did vocabulary tests each week on 20 words that fit the “rule” we were talking about (though, rough, through, etc) and 5 bonus words that were like compound words or something.&nbsp;<br>My practicum is focusing HARD on phonics and having children at their specific levels of spelling/reading. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>For my personal spelling experience, it was the common go to spelling approach- get a list of words, pretest, use throughout the week, test on Friday, and repeat. &nbsp; In later elementary, we had spelling words for each month, and we had to only go back and write words we missed the last time. &nbsp;<br>In my practicum, my teacher doesn't do explicit "spelling" lessons or tests.  We do tier two word work each week.  But my teacher is against spelling test.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In my elementary school, spelling was taught alongside writing. We’d learn a new spelling pattern and my teacher would incorporate that specific pattern into a writing task. I remember one wall of our classroom being devoted to a visual representation of all the patterns we’d learned, to keep the new spelling fresh in our minds. My teacher would cover the wall up for spelling tests. At my current practicum, my teacher doesn’t use spelling tests but devotes a portion of writing time to word work where students learn new spelling patterns. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I REALLY struggled with spelling! Unfortunately, I don’t remember a whole lot from elementary school. But one think I do remember from spelling is the weekly cycle of words to learn. I learned these by writing them in kool-aid powder. Then, if I spelt the word right I could lick my finger. I hated spelling, but I liked this!<br>In my practicum (4th grade) there is absolutely no focus on spelling. When the students write they are constantly told, “do your best to sound it out but spelling doesn’t matter”. My question is, when does spelling start to count? These students are going into middle school next year. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>When I was in Elementary School spelling was taught to me through weekly spelling tests of about 15-20words. In class we didn’t take much time going over the words, at least from what I remember. At home I practiced spelling and writing them constantly. In a previous practicum experience in my home town in a 1st grade classroom, they got rid of spelling tests. I found so interesting and it made me kinda happy. Especially knowing the stress and anxiety the tests brought me. My current placement doesn’t have spelling tests, and we haven’t done any thing specifically&nbsp; for spelling.          <description><![CDATA[<div>In elementary school, we had weekly spelling tests to go along with our reading curriculum. I remember everyone having the same list of words and the words getting harder towards the end of the list. To practice, my dad had me write each word 5-10x to ensure I would pass my spelling test. I do not remember phonics instruction in our spelling curriculum.  — In my practicum, my teacher had the students complete the WTW spelling assessment and used that to separate them into spelling groups. Each afternoon, during independent work time, one of their items to complete is spelling. There is a sentence day, phonics day, and practice writing day. My teacher pulls them in small groups to review the words. At the end of the week there is a spelling test for each group. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I vividly remember our weekly spelling tests all through elementary school. Every week we would get a list of words that we would work through and at the end of the week we would get a spelling test. Overall it was a very traditional system. Other than that, I don’t remember much about how I learned to spell. Something that I really appreciate about how my CO is teaching my students how to spell is that she has them all at different group levels. Growing up, my class would all get the same exact words and I remember some students getting frustrated week after week because they felt so behind. My teacher has made an active effort to meet students where they are in there spelling. This way every student is learning and feeling supported wherever they are.</div>]]></description>

I don't remember how much time we had for each list, but spelling came naturally to me, so I usually did well.&nbsp;<br><br>At my practicum, we do spelling tests. However, each student has their own spelling test. At the beginning of the year, they were given a long list of words, and as they went through them, if there were any that they misspelled, they would add it to their list, and they would only be tested on 5 words a week. Now, they find words in the books they are reading that they don't know how to spell. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I remember doing weekly spelling tests every week. I don't ever remember learning phonemic awareness and/or phonological awareness. I never really struggled with spelling. I do remember practicing my spelling words with my mom sometimes the night before the spelling test. I also remember doing some spelling tests in 100% cursive (probably in 2nd grade).&nbsp;<br><br>My students would use a high-frequency word list and find spelling words with a partner that they struggled with for their past spelling tests. They just had a spelling test using their classmates' names which I think is a great idea...and bonus points for if they could do first and last names!!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In elementary school, I remember taking a spelling test weekly. Throughout teach week, I remember going through the spelling words of the week and memorizing them before our Friday test. I also remember in 6th grade having a spelling bee with the rest of the grade, which was something that I really enjoyed studying for. For me, spelling came ways for me because I could visualize the word in my head before I wrote it on paper.&nbsp;<br>In my practicum, our students have done a lot of work with cvc and explicit phonics instruction based on the spelling tests my cooperating teacher administers every other week or so. Through the time that I have been to my practicum, I have noticed a dramatic change in the students’ abilities to read and spell regular and irregular (heart) words.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I remember a lot about how I was taught spelling. We would have a list every week. We started the week off with a pretest to see what we knew. We would then have a worksheet to complete throughout the week that was about the spelling words and would be due Friday which was the day of the test. We would then have our final spelling test that Friday. I think in younger years we would be taught more of the decoding and phonics of the words, but that decreased as I got older. I have not seen spelling take place in my practicum. I am with sixth graders, so I am not sure if they do it then or not. However, I remember doing spelling in sixth grade. This gif sums up how I feel like spelling is taught - teachers just want us to know how words are spelled.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In elementary school, I was taught spelling and writing at the same time. I don't remember much of it but my parents were always very involved in my weekly spelling tests. We would go through the words every night and the ones that I got wrong, I would have to rewrite 5 times. In our house on Thursdays was known as "bad dad Thursdays" which doesn't make sense because he never administered the tests, just thought of the ides. So on Thursdays, when we got a word wrong we would have to rewrite it 10 times and then retest. There were a lot of tears but I always got 100% on my tests. In my practicum, my students do a lot of writing. They have their own writing journals and then their own handwriting journals that they use everyday. My students do struggle a lot when it comes to spelling. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I honesltly don't remember being taught spelling. I remember having sight words at home and each week my parents would add 5-10 more sight words hanging on the wall in the house and then I would find them and learn them and then at the end of the week they would hang them up above my bed and I would read them all before I went to bed. So that was at home which is cool to think about now how amazing my parents are but all I remember about spelling in elementary school is spelling tests, we would get the list on mondays and take the test on thursdays. I don't rememeber any spelling instruction before those tests in 2nd grade. In my practicum we have two groups the yellow and white, white is low readers, simpler spelling words, yellow is the high readers. They both have a list of spelling words that follow a pattern. Like long vowel words or silent e words and then on monday they cut out the words and sort them, then tuesday they make sentences with the words, wednesday they illustrate and do a speed sort and then thursday they change a letter in the word to keep the same pattern but make a different word. This stratigy is definetly aimed towards them reading the words in text rather than memorizing how to spell them but usually the spelling check on friday goes pretty well becaue they have been working with the same 15 words all week. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In second and third grade I remember getting a list of vocabulary words each week that we needed to memorize. By Friday we needed to have them mastered because we had a spelling test. We were never given the definitions or an example of the word in a sentence. Instead it was just a list of 20 words. I would sit at the kitchen counter each night with my parents trying extremely hard to memorize them, but I gained no new knowledge of what each word meant.&nbsp;<br>For each unit in my practicum students are given a set of vocabulary words. With each set of vocabulary words students&nbsp;have a packet where they write the definition, the word in a sentence and they have to find the word in their textbook and copy the in-text sentence as well. I feel like this is more beneficial because students are gaining more background information about each spelling word. Rather than just being expected to memorize them.&nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Spelling - Sierra Fisher</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I was taught spelling mostly through lists and tests. I remember getting a spelling list each week, from the time I was in first grade all the way to sixth grade. We would get our lists on Mondays, and then take a test on Fridays. When I was younger, I remember practicing the words throughout the week with partners or spelling games but, I always struggled to spell the words right. I felt as though I learned how to memorize the spelling of the words, and not necessarily why words were spelled in a particular way. My parents had me do practice spelling tests almost every night after school because I never did well on my tests. <br><br>In regards to my practicum, we do not spend any instructional time on spelling. However, the students have a phonics workbook that they complete each week. My teacher looks over these workbooks, but we never go over them as a class. </div>]]></description>
