Double vision can happen with the Cardboard viewer as the lenses are in a fixed position, although I haven’t had many complaints of this happening so far.

With the Samsung Gear headset, there is a dial to adjust the focus of the headset. The Oculus Rift has a slider for changing the distance of the lenses to match your eye distance and also seems to autofocus.

With motion sickness, I have come across some VR apps that cause this. We were evaluating another app called ‘A Walk through Dementia’ which makes me feel ill every time I use it. My first 360 video also had the same issues, this was down to placing the camera too high up in the room.

I have managed to put the Gear VR/Oculus Rift headset on with my glasses but I do tend to take them off. As both headset allow for focus adjustment and so far I haven’t had any issues.

Stephen

For the current project we used apps that had already been developed. The app for the Cardboard viewer was produced by the National Autistic Society. http://www.autism.org.uk/get-involved/tmi.aspx . The app for the Oculus Rift was produced by SPOSA Bratislava which is a Slovakian charity. https://www.oculus.com/experiences/rift/1079364535503791/

I have looked into VR development but think I will be limited in what I might be able to produce. This will be likely to contain 360 video only. A good place to start if you are interested in this would be Udacity which offers a number of free and paid course on developing VR applications.

Stephen

For the workshop, we had class sizes of about 30. The class was split into 2 with one half doing a separate activity while the other half used the VR equipment. As the app running time is pretty short this meant that they were passed about quite quickly. They then swapped activities. Scalability would be an issue in larger class sizes with the requirement to buy more phones (budget constraints being an issue) or for students to use their own phones if they were compatible.

Stephen
