How are you empowering your learners? Are you helping them focus on their efforts and their choices? Are you more focused on compliance or autonomy? How do you balance the two?

For P1s, to empower learners: Use teachable moments to teach the students (example teaching students on school values) so that they can relate better and be more motivated to improve on their behaviour and do better. Balance of both compliance and autonomy is needed.

When students have arguments with one another that can be easily solved, they have been taught the routines of how to deconflict the situation. The ball is in their court if they choose to use the routines taught to resolve the conflict, so I guess this is more of autonomy. I do intervene when necessary.

Disclaimer: This conflict resolution routine is still a WIP.

- Giving them different roles to play in a class and group setting. Praise them for their effort and recognising them for making the first move or taking ownership to do the correct thing.
- As a P1 teacher, I am leaning towards focusing on their efforts daily as I want to build the routines. But the affirmation of their choices comes in when we talk about their actions. Praising a child for doing the correct thing and making the correct decisions in front of the class helps set the tone and expectations.
- My usual style is to focus on compliance first. Even when I give autonomy to the children, it would be within boundaries that I set.
