The word Diplomacy means the art of dealing with people in a sensitive and effective way. 
Since the US did not want to sign the Treaty of Versailles, or join the League of Nations, they decided to turn to the policy of Isolationism. Isolationism meant that the country (in this case the US) would choose to not get involved with any of the other countries problems. 
During this time the US decided to focus only on the Economic growth of it's country  and figuring out how to get themselves out of Economic Depression also known as the Great Depression.
