"If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" takes place outside and all around the boy's house . A boy gives a mouse a cookie outside his house. Then there is a chain effect all staring with the cookie. Since the boy gave the mouse a cookie he had had to give him a glass of milk. And since the boy gave him a glass of milk, he then had to give the mouse a straw. This chain continues until the story comes full circle and the mouse once again wants a cookie.

"If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" shows cause and effect and sequencing throughout the entire book. The mouse starts off by asking the boy for a cookie, and there is a cain effect that giving the mouse a cookie leads to him asking for a glass of milk. The glass of milk then makes the mouse need a straw and so on. Students can use sequence cards to first work on practicing the order of events and see how cause and effect comes into play.
