Meeting Summary: Lauryn and I talked about job applications and work experiences, including part-time jobs. Lauryn has been working part-time for two years and found out that she comes to work in the morning. So it was so funny and respectful to say that she earns a lot of money but spends all of her money on her hobbies and is short of money. The hat, which is her uniform, was also cute.

I talked about short-term and unique part-time jobs at polling places, cafes, and wearing hanbok. The cafe where I worked told me that Lauryn's favorite actor is a model and it's fun.

We also talked about good and bad customers. Some customers made strange complaints and some good customers gave compliments.

I also talked about difficulties while working, but Lorin said it was easier than I thought and I didn't have much difficulty either.

And we asked each other if there was another part-time job they wanted to do, and Lorin told us about stores that sell products because she loves K-pop. I love board games, so we talked about working part-time at a board game cafe. Both of them said they wanted to make a lot of money by doing easy things.

Meeting Summary/Plan: During our first meeting we both introduced ourselves by talking about what grade we were in, how old we were, and what our majors are. I learned that she is 21, but she added that it was in the Korean age system which I remembered was a bit different than our own so upon googling it I found we were probably more or less the same age then. I also found out that she is a global business major (국제 경영) and is currently in student government (학생회) at her college. We switched topics a little later since we needed to catch up and we talked about our job experiences and I learned that she works at a cafeteria where she cleans and serves drinks (so I think she meant like a cafe or coffee shop type place lol). She also saw my nails and we both showed ours off and thought each others were cute. And we finished off our meeting by planning to have another call at the same time this coming Wednesday :-)

The language barrier (and my bad internet) was a bit hard to get around so we had a lot of pauses between sentences or questions where we were either trying to figure out what the other was asking or we weren't sure how to translate our response, so to prepare for our next meeting I plan to write down a few more phrases or just simple words to have at the ready to at least be able to get the sentence point across. Meeting Summary and Plan: We talked about usage of polite vs. informal speech mostly with who you would use it with and she explained that Korean people will usually use formal speech with people older than them or just to show respect to another person, and use informal speech with anyone the same age or younger than you. I also learned that if you meet a stranger you would use polite, unless you are the same age (which I guess you would have to ask them first in polite speech how old they are to find this out? lol) then you can use impolite. Or if the stranger is a "rude person" then you can use informal with them lol. Korean people do not like when strangers use informal speech with them! It shows disrespect. We also shared how we use formal/informal with family members, and I asked if she had to use formal speech when she was at work. We plan to have our next meeting at the same time next Monday where we will talk about a controversial social issue. I decided that it was difficult for foreigners to understand the difference between informal and honorifics, so I made a simple ppt and explained it to Amanda.

It taught me how to make 존댓말, that the honorific vocabulary is an irregular word form with more respect.

Amanda said that unlike Korea, the U.S. does not use 존댓말 because Americans have no manners

And I also learned the difference in Etiquette between South and North America, so I got very interesting information.

Listening to these no manner American stories, I answered that I would be hurt if I met such an American, and Amanda agreed that I would be hurt, too.

The U.S. doesn't use slangs at all for business conversations.

As long as we are very close, even if we are a professor, we can talk using slangs.

We started the meeting off with a short powerpoint talking about how polite speech is used in Korea. We went over 존댓말 and 반말 and how certain words change because of it. I learned that you only switch to 반말 when you're very close to the person, and while Koreans will understand if a foreigner does not use 존댓말, it is still very much preferred to try. I learned that in university, you always use 존댓말 at first, even though you might be the same age as the people around you because you are not close yet. We also both learned that in the opposite country, it is okay to use 반말 with your family. We discussed the cultural differences with politeness between both countries. I told her it is very common here for people to not be polite, to nudge in public, to use slang regardless of closeness, etc. I told her politeness varies depending on region in America, and how stereotypically, Southerners run more polite than Northerners. In our third meeting we talked about social issues in both of our countries. Yebeen talked about the low birth rate in Korea and how many people there were now giving up on marriage because of the economy, it being too expensive to have a wedding and be able to start/support a family. But she told me that from what she has seen about weddings in the United States, she thinks they look fun. So from that I assumed that Korean weddings are usually much more formal and reserved in comparison. After that I introduced the topic of mental health issues in the united states and how, even though it is becoming more mainstream to talk about them, it is still a prevalent issue. From that though, Yebeen said that she thought "the image of the U.S. is positive" so she didn't think mental health was a social problem. Cam has a license and a car, but he doesn't drive because she's scared. So she says she only uses it to go to school and her parents' house. Then I teach her new world the word 'Mrs. Kim', which is a playful term for women in Korea who are not good at driving.

And when we talked in Korean about how to use the $100,000, Cam said that she would use the money for travel expenses with her husband, and that it would be worth it for traveling around Korea. In regard to the expectations of college students in America, I told Haeryeon that while some schools, teachers, and parents heavily push the idea of going to college onto students, it is not a requirement and university in America is not treated in the same regard as university in Korea. She informed me that as high school senior, her day would go from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day. We talked about how SATs are the American equivalent to the entrance exams in Korea in the way that the better your performance on the test, the better the school that you can get admitted to, but I think that the Korean entrance exams seem a lot harder than the SATs. Meeting Summary: Lauryn and I first talked about the low birth rate problem in Korea. I said that the reason why the low birth rate problem is so serious in Korea is that it costs a lot to get married and it costs a lot to raise children. Especially in Korea, I said that education costs are high.

Meeting Summary: When I asked Cam, who is already married, how her married life is, Cam said that she is very satisfied with her married life and is grateful that she can be with the person she loves. I was very envious of this.

When Cam asked me if marriage is necessary in Korea, I said that these days, Korea is gradually changing to a place where people value personal success more than marriage, and as a result, the number of people getting married is decreasing and the importance of marriage is actually gradually losing its importance. Cam said that he somewhat agreed with this.

First, we talked about what we want to do if we had big money. I want to travel. I hope to go to other countries like Banff, Quebec City in Canada and a various country of Europe and USA as well. Anellis, my partner, want to get a car. Everyone wants to get their own car and house. It’s too hard but we used to try to get it. By imagining getting a lot of money, we get motivation.

Second, I told her about top 3 place in South Korea. I recommended her places called Anguk(안국), Gyeongbokgung(경복궁), and Incheon(인천). In Anguk, there is a famous restaurant, bakery café and bar. London Bagel Museum and Artist Bakery-Korean most popular bakery café-is there. And I told her that Gyeongbokgung is the biggest palace in Korea. We can rent Hanbok and if someone wears Hanbok, admission fees are free. After passing through the magnificent palace, there are Gwanghwamun(광화문) and Cheonggyejeon(청계천), so I recommended you go there. Lastly Incheon is my home town, so I know this place best.

I said that I want to go to Mangwon-dong in Seoul because it’s famous for its bakeries. I really want to do a “bread tour” there and try different kinds of bread.

Meeting Summary : In the US, there are also ways to speak politely to older people. In general, I told him that the way I speak to my parents and professors is similar to how I speak to my friends, but the difference is that I rarely use jokes or slang. In this regard, I thought there would be no line between formal and informal speech in the US, but I found out that there is a certain degree of distinction. That’s why I can talk to professors very naturally and comfortably. In Korea, we are polite to professors and older people, but it’s often difficult to feel natural and comfortable, so I was surprised that there was no such thing in the US. And in Cam’s case, she said that she uses a lot of difficult words when writing emails to professors. She said that he likes to be very formal, so I said that writing emails is the hardest for me, and we talked about how we write emails. After that, while talking in Korean, I asked him about the difference between formal and informal speech in Korea, and she answered that she thought that changing from formal to informal speech was a difference in ‘intimacy’, and that using formal speech more formally meant that she respected the other person. And in Korea, there is a difference between formal and informal speech, but even within that, the difference in speech really shows how good or bad the relationship is with that person, she said.

And as we wrapped up the last meeting, we talked about what we felt, and Cam said that she definitely gained confidence in speaking Korean and that it became much easier to speak.

I also had no confidence in English and had no idea how to speak at all. When I couldn't express what I wanted to say in English, I used a translator for a bit, but when I prepared questions and sentences on my own and spoke about them in the meeting, it was really fun and I gained confidence.

Meeting Summary: We talked a lot about money and the value of different things. Nahyun mentioned that she would buy a car with that much money, so I shared my feelings about driving. Meeting summary: We talked about children and marriage for this meeting. It was really interesting to talk about this, because I feel I have a slightly more nuanced perspective on the issue. She asked how my married life is, and I told her that I have never been happier. Not only because I love my husband but also because I never have to date ever again. I told her that I hate dating/dating culture in America. I was a little shocked to find out that marriage is more of an afterthought in Korean society today. I was aware of the declining birthrate, but I had no idea that it extended to marriage. We talked about the assumptions made about people who get married young in Korea, and it is a common thought that if someone gets married young, it could be because of a premarital pregnancy. I told her that similar assumptions exist in the U.S., but from what I see, people are getting married younger in recent times. Our conversation about kids was fun, and I was glad to find out that Nahyun also wants kids. My outlook on parenthood has changed as I’ve grown, and while I don’t think couples need to have children, I think it’s a really special part of marriage and building a family together. This conversation was very insightful, and I really enjoyed learning more about this aspect of Korean culture.

Meeting Summary: This meeting was very insightful, as I really had never looked into the difference between formal and informal speech and how I should use it. We first spoke about formal and informal speech in the U.S. and if there is much of a difference. I told her there isn’t a big difference, but there are some cases where it is best to speak more politely and clearly even in the states. When speaking face-to-face, I explained that my tone and word choice doesn’t differ much between strangers, elders, or friends. The biggest difference in speech is with the use of slang, which is mostly dedicated for people my age or someone I am very close with. I explained that emails are where I am most formal, and I expressed my love for writing emails, as I feel very confident in my ability to articulate my thoughts clearly. For my portion, I mostly asked about situations and relationships and how one would go about communicating with them. I gave many examples, such as between strangers, parents, friends, or baristas, and she told me which type of speech would be appropriate in these cases. I learned that between friends, the decision to speak casually depends on comfort between the two, and I think that’s a really nice way to distinguish relationships.
