What is "Netiquette?"

Netiquette is the proper and acceptable way of communicating on the Internet. Etiquette deals with the use of good manners on the internet and rules on how to properly use the internet. Netiquette should be used during email, social networking sites, and even instant messaging or chat rooms.

Students need to learn about Netiquette so that they learn how to properly use the Internet for future careers/schooling and to keep them out of trouble. In todays society kids are using technology at a much younger age and a larger aspect of a child's life is passed upon technology. We should be teaching students the rules and guidelines for using technology like we teach students the rules and guidelines of writing an essay.

Since today's society is based so much around technology it is important for teachers to also know the rules and guidelines for technology. Teachers need to successfully incorporate them into lessons plans so their students can be successful users of technology. As future teachers we need to be professionally ready to teach out students netiquette so they can be successful. Technology is being incorporated into all different parts of the classroom so it is important for us to teach students that technology can be a tool but it can also be dangerous if they are not careful.

Personally it is important for us to know understand netiquette because things like social media, chat rooms, searches, and conversations are forever when they are put online. Employers and important figures in our lives have access to our technology so we must use the proper netiquette. Technology is an incredible tool as long it is being used properly.

Netiquette #1: Same Standards

When using technology you should adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life. In general most people are law abiding citizens however when some people get on the internet they think the laws do not apply. When anyone is on the internet they must follow the laws put in place by the government. There are written laws in todays society pertaining just to technology usage. All of the laws must be followed or punishments will occur. It is also important that everyone makes ethical decisions while using the internet as well. It does not matter if the law is broken online or in real life because either way there will still be punishments. I chose this netiquette because I believe that when people use technology they think they are hidden behind the screen and can not get in trouble for breaking laws. Breaking laws on the internet is sometimes over looked but is a crucial component to having proper etiquette.

It is important to teach this to students because they may have the oppression that technology gives them free range to do whatever they please. They should be taught that they must apply to all of the laws set in place and understand that there are separate laws when using technology. It is important to lay out the rules of technology for them so they understand what they can and can not do online. It is important for students to understand how serious it is to break a law when using technology. Teachers should make sure their students understand that technology is a wonderful tool not a weapon or a shield.

Another important item to make sure we are using netiquette properly is to make sure we cite all of the sources we use. Whenever a person uses information, videos, images from any source it needs to properly cited in order to prevent plagiarism. There are several laws revolving around plagiarism and citing other peoples work that needs to be followed so everyone stays within the constructs of the law. Even if someone is not copying what the other person said word for word it still needs to be cited. These people deserve credit for what they have said and no one should steal their words without citing. Citing work gives the previous author the proper credit. Taking others people work for your own is a serious violation and depending on the institution and previous author could lead to very serious punishments.

It is important to teach students that they need to submit their own individual work and thoughts. They must also understand that stealing other peoples work is not to be tolerated. This topic is stressed so much in High School and College however I think it should be introduced to students at an early age since they learn to research at a younger age. If they understand the importance of citing sources at a young age then it will make high school and college easier for them in that aspect. By teaching students to cite other peoples work you are also teaching them that if they bring in an experts words properly they are strengthening their research and work.

Teaching Netiquette #2: Citing

Since I am planning on teaching elementary school I think citing sources should be introduced at this point. I would not teach them that the exact way for citing but instead show them that at the end of a piece of writing they should include any sources they used. This can be done by giving the students examples of the kind of writing you want with a simple works cited page at the bottom. Therefore whenever they are doing something like writing the book they start getting into the habit of listing the book that they used underneath their writing. It could be incorporated into the grading rubric and be worth one point for having their sources. This will make them understand at an early age the importance of not plagiarizing and make a works cited page a normal part of their writing. I would definitely stress how problematic plagiarism can be so that they understand why they have to give credit to those deserving.

Understanding the community you are visiting is an important aspect of being a part of the online population. It is important to know what a certain website is used for, for example, Craigslist.com is used to buy and sell goods and to solicit services, it would not be inappropriate to post opinions or photos of something that is not for sale. A Facebook group that is for bird watching would not be a good place to try and sell something or to promote an event.

Failing to understand the community you are visiting before you post leads to a negative experience for everyone; the poster will most likely have to deal with the community's reaction to whatever was posted, the community will most likely waste time reading the post, and they also won't like having an unrelated post on their page.

Students are already familiar with the internet by the time they are in school, but they are likely to begin using social media while in late elementary school or early middle school. It is important to teach students how to correctly become a member of an online community, otherwise the internet wouldn't the same.
To teach students about knowing the expectations of an online community, you could create an online message board, and have the students to respond to the posts of some their classmates, this will teach them to be relevant and constructive. Implementing this practice into the class regularly will help the students understand the expectations of the site.

Rule #4 Share expert knowledge

The internet is the greatest learning tool we have, but unfortunately not everything on the internet is true. The internet is commonly used to argue and debate ideas about nearly everything. A responsible way to behave on the internet is using expert information, produced by a reputable source, instead of extreme right or left sources. Adding valuable information makes everyone more knowledgeable, and it will help the people reading come to consensus instead of just arguing and sharing incorrect information.
Students have to use expert knowledge when they are doing school work, so they should always focus on using reliable sources anyway. Practicing using academic/expert information on school work will influence students to question whether or not something from a non reliable source is true, this will help the students to reject potentially fake news and instead practice fact checking.
