Artifacts: Documentary Reflection - The Secret Life of the Baby

Project 2 - Risk Factors and Teratogens for Women During Pregnancy and Babies

Courses: ECED-1075 (02): Child Development

Reflections: The artifacts I selected for this section include my documentary reflection “The Secret Life of the Baby” and my Project 2: Risk Factors and Teratogens completed for my ECED-1075 course. The purpose of these artifacts is to demonstrate my understanding of how development begins even before birth and how environmental and biological factors influence a child’s growth, health, and well-being.

I chose to include these artifacts under the Child Development outcome because they show my ability to connect early learning theories with real-life factors that impact children’s development. Through these assignments, I learned that understanding a child’s development requires looking at both prenatal influences and postnatal experiences such as attachment, care, and stimulation.

These artifacts represent my best work because they highlight my growing knowledge of developmental milestones and the importance of supporting children and families from the very beginning. I applied research and course materials to analyze how teratogens can affect development and reflected on how positive environments can promote healthy growth.

Through these experiences, I have developed stronger skills in observation, critical thinking, and reflection. I now have a deeper appreciation for how each stage of development starting before birth affects a child’s overall well-being. This understanding guides me to provide nurturing, developmentally appropriate care that supports every child’s unique path of learning and growth.

One example of advocacy was when I noticed a child who found it hard to join group play. I supported the child by gently encouraging peers to include them and by creating small-group activities where they could feel more comfortable.

I also practiced communicating with my mentor and team about children’s needs and learning interests, ensuring our planning reflected their strengths and well-being. This section highlights how research, reflective practice, and professional learning have shaped my understanding of high-quality early childhood education.

Completing the Risk Factors - Teratogens for Women, Pregnancy, and Babies research project helped me connect scientific research to real-world child development. I learned how prenatal and environmental factors influence children’s health, growth, and learning potential, which strengthened my ability to make informed, evidence-based decisions in practice. Similarly, assignments on Creating Documentation, Observation, and Curriculum Planning deepened my skills in observing children, analyzing their strengths and interests, and planning meaningful, developmentally appropriate learning experiences.

Health-related learning, such as the Handwashing Video Assignment and Health Test, reinforced the importance of maintaining safe and healthy environments for children. Additionally, obtaining my Standard First Aid & CPR Level C certification equipped me with the practical skills and confidence to respond to emergencies and ensure the well-being of every child in my care.

My placement reflections, including observations and activity planning, allowed me to apply theory to practice and reflect critically on my experiences. These reflections encouraged me to continually evaluate and improve my teaching strategies, respond to children’s needs effectively, and engage families in meaningful ways.

Together, these experiences demonstrate my commitment to lifelong learning, evidence-based practice, and reflective professionalism. I now understand that professional growth is a continuous journey - one that combines research, hands-on practice, and ongoing reflection. Each course, assignment, and placement experience has contributed to my development as a capable, ethical, and compassionate Early Childhood Educator, ready to advocate for children, support families, and contribute positively to the profession.

Artifacts: Formal Report Assignment

Courses: COMM-3082 Communications for Community Studies

Reflections: Creating my professional portfolio gave me an opportunity to pause and reflect on who I am becoming as an Early Childhood Educator. While working on this assignment, I was able to think deeply about the values, experiences, and motivations that guide my approach to working with young children. It helped me look back on what I’ve learned throughout my program, especially about intentional teaching, observation, building relationships, and creating inclusive environments and recognize how these pieces fit together in shaping my professional identity.

I also found that writing about my goals encouraged me to think about the kind of educator I want to be in the future. This assignment reminded me that being an ECE is not only about supporting children’s development, but also about continuous growth, self-reflection, and learning from every experience and interaction. Completing this portfolio strengthened my confidence and helped me realize how much progress I have made throughout my placements and coursework.

Overall, this assignment was meaningful because it allowed me to express my passion for early childhood education in a clear and organized way.

Artifacts: Social & Emotional Learning in 0-3 Years

Courses: ECED-1076-(02) Curriculum and Pedagogy

Reflection: Completing my professional portfolio and participating in the Curriculum Café presentation helped me deepen my understanding of myself as an Early Childhood Educator. The professional portfolio allowed me to reflect on my personal values, motivations, and the experiences that shaped my approach to working with young children. As I wrote about my journey in ECE, I realized how much I have grown in my ability to observe, reflect, and create responsive and inclusive learning environments. It pushed me to think about my future goals and the kind of educator I want to continue becoming.

The Curriculum Café group assignment on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in children aged 0–3 was also an important learning experience. Working with my group required collaboration, communication, and shared planning, which mirrored the teamwork that is essential in real early learning settings. Researching SEL for infants and toddlers helped me understand how early emotional experiences, such as secure attachment, co-regulation, trust, and responsive relationships, build the foundation for lifelong well-being. Presenting this content also strengthened my confidence in explaining developmental concepts and connecting theory to actual classroom practice.
