The Uncertainty Reduction Theory explains how future turbulence is reduced or future interaction will be easier depending on how familiar a person is towards who they are communicating with. People then tend to seek more knowledge about the ones they are communicating with. There are 2 types of uncertainty which is Behavioral and Cognitive.

In my experience upon meeting my classmates for the first time online, I tend to be slightly timid or reserved at first as I try to observe how my classmates would act. I assessed what was normal to do or say or what is too weird or taboo for them. One example is how I met Dani. Dani had a humorous approach when she introduced herself to the rest of the class. I find her humor is similar to mine, so it was much easier to approach her for the first time since I was familiar with that kind of humor. This type of uncertainty is the on the behavioral side.

I don't know what else her interests are or who was she like. A conversation about ourselves at one point helped know what kind of people we are and gave both of us an idea how each other was like. We shared stories and experience that each of us had and that helped us become more familiar with each other. That side is the Cognitive Uncertainty, tackling more about who the person was like.
