We think that the best option for Mike is to continue the discussion in private with the student. Confronting them in class may cause the situation to escalate even more, and might make the student feel threatened. If the student walks out of class and is clearly still upset, they are allowed to do that! The best course of action, to us, is for Mike to reach out to the student to ask to continue the discussion in private, incorporating the use of a mediator or neutral party if it is necessary!

In general, we agreed that if the environment of the group chat is preventing Blanca from completing her school work appropriately or is bordering into harassment/bullying than the professor should intercede. What will work best will depend on the class. In general it was suggested that the prof address the class in general and then escalate to specific students if the problem was not resolved. Regardless of the best solution, if Blanca has been prevented from doing group work than the prof should work with her to ensure that she is still able to successfully complete her assigned tasks.
