I believe the meaning of endless inventory is having a vast knowledge of music and what it entails. For an example, Ratliff said something in the text that stood out to me. He said you become one who likes song X and then you take interest in the musician and then you might become one that likes musician X. This really spoke to me because with music i feel the exact same way. If I really like a song and I like it to an extent I start to look up other songs by the musician and before you know it I start to like the musician.

The simplest is by liking it a lot, or loving it. A small change in identity takes place. You become One Who Likes Song X, and if you take an interest in who the musician is under the performance, the voice within the voice, you might become One Who Likes Musician X. You may have tapped into something real there: not just a copyrighted melody or a product, but a human sensibility.

Fela Kuti’s music has served some of the same purposes as the Grateful Dead’s, although the impulse to collect it must of necessity be different, because he didn’t spend thirty years touring, playing the same theaters and civic centers, establishing a circuit of places to play music and a steady conceptual frame for how to hear it.
