King Henry VIII was a former King of London during the English reformation, best known for his 6 wives. His wives were Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, and Catherine Parr. His first wife failed to give him a son causing him to want a divorce which wasn't allowed at the time. He broke away from the catholic church and created a new religion: The Church of England. He was a humanist and a tyrant; He resorted to execution often, for example his wife Anne Boleyn for 'treason' as well as his right hand man, Thomas More. King Henry VIII continued to remarry over the years until his death in 1547 due to natural causes and his bad health.

King Louis XIV's reign 1774

King Louis XIV is a good example of an absolute monarch because he was a king who demanded loyalty and also weakened the nobility. He had his image celebrated culturally and showed his power through the military. His reign is the longest recorded in European history, 72 years and 110 days. He controlled all aspects of French society. He sentenced people to death, created new laws, and started fashion trends as well. He is best known for being a perfect definition of an absolute monarch by his actions as King.

Queen Elizabeth I's reign 1558

Queen Elizabeth I came to be queen of England in 1558 after her half sister, Mary Tudor, died. During her reign Catholics opposed her rule because she was protestant. She then restored unity to England by creating a compromise between the catholic church and Protestantism after the former queen tried to eliminate it from the people. Elizabeth did not want to marry, meaning she did not produce an heir to the throne ultimately gaining the nickname the Virgin Queen. She's a queen that led her people with just as much authority as her father, King Henry VIII, which makes her a significant person in history!

Thomas Hobbes - Leviathan 1651

Thomas Hobbes was an English philosopher who is well known for his book Leviathan published in April of 1651. He believed that all humans are selfish and nasty and that without government, there would be war between people. This book refers to things like social contract, the role of religion, etc. It was made clear that he believed in having an absolute monarch.. and that giving power to one ruler is what seemed best to him. The book talks about how social unity between the people is easier to achieve when there is one set ruler.

Storming of the Bastille 1789

The storming of the Bastille happened on July 14th 1789 and is a significant moment in history because it showed the start of the French revolution. This event created a national holiday called Bastille Day on the anniversary date for the French. At the time the people were scared that their king was going to arrest France's newly constituted National Assembly and that led to 900 Parisians to surround the Bastille with revolutionary demands. The peasants retaliated against their superiors, attacked manors and destroyed feudal documents; the storming of the Bastille resulted in 94 deaths and the prisoners were freed. This act of violence led to King Louis XIV being overthrown and a lot of people getting executed, along with the King and his wife.

During the reign of terror King Louis XVI was put on trial for being a traitor to France. It was said he was a traitor because he tried to flee the country and apparently tried to get other monarchies to help him destroy the revolution. In January of 1793, Louis XVI was executed. His wife Marie Antoinette was later put on trial in October of 1793 for treason as well for trying to undermine the French government. These executions are a significant part of history because they symbolized the end of monarchy in France and the start of democracy for the people.

Otto von Bismarck was prime minister of Prussia as well as the first chancellor of the German Empire. As chancellor he unified 39 states into one German nation. The speech 'Blood and Iron' was given on September 30th, 1862 while he was prime minister of Prussia. The speech showed the people the importance of military strength as well as the power of industrialization to get to German unification. Otto von Bismarck believed that those factors were needed for the country to be successful.. "If there is ever another war in Europe, it will come out of some damned silly thing in the Balkans. The blood symbolizes the military power and the iron symbolizes industrialization.

The Berlin Conference 1884-1885

The Berlin conference was a meeting between major European powers that negotiated claims of territory of Africa. They established rules while dividing territories as well as the legal claim that all of Africa could be occupied by whoever could take it. Africa was full of raw materials and natural resources which was something that Europeans sought for during the time of industrialization.The Berlin conference declared the Congo River basin to be neutral. Otto von Bismarck set up the conference to settle the ongoing arguments between European powers who were looking to exploit the natural resources,and for them to be able to claim whichever territory.
