After World War Two, Japan created a constitution. The text of Article 9 of the Constitution contain a No War clause that came to effect on May 3, 1947. During the article, the Japanese Government renounce war as a right of sovereignty and the refuses to settle disputes using military force. A quote from Article 9 states "We desire to occupy an honored place in an international society striving for the preservation of peace, and the banishment of tyranny and slavery, oppression and intolerance for all time from the earth. We recognize that all peoples of the world have the right to live in peace, free from fear and want.”. Furthermore, Japan maintain diplomatic relations with every country except North Korea. Although Japan is one of North Korea's main are incapable of attacking/invading Japan because they rely a arttilerry and missies projections. Japan, however, has better naval power, technology, and stronger allies. In conclusion, Japan is legally incapable of declaring war and its main enemies are inferior to Japan. This means the future of Japan will likely not contain any wars. However, there are still possibilities of China declaring war on Japan. Japan and China relationships are bad because of war history and territory issues such as the Senkaku Islands.

Japan was a small island which was lacking in natural resources like rubber, coal, iron, and oil. Their goal was to build an empire to gain materials for industrial and economic growth. In 1931, Japan staged an attack from the Chinese planting explosives to use as an excuse for invasion. In a few months, Japan took over the entire Manchuria region for its coal and iron. This aggression was condemned by the League Nation, meaning Japan had to withdraw in 1933. In 1937, a full war broke out between Japan and China called the Second Sino-Japanese War. The battle had major damages and deaths to both sides. Japan then signed an alliance with the Nazis Germany and Fasinist Italy, doing the Axis Powers. The agreement was if any of the three were attacked by a country not already in the war, the others would help. For Japan, they ere aiming for exapanding invasion of Asia and the Pacific. In 1941, Japan launched an attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Over 350 Japanese aircraft bombed American battleships, airfields, and fuel storage tanks. The attack resulted in the destruction or damage of 21 ships and the deaths of 2,403 Americans. After the attack of Pearl Harbour, Japan now was taking over Southeast Asia in parts of Philippines, British Malaya and Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, and Burma. In 1942, Japan planned to trap US carriers and capture Midway Island. However, this was already discovered by America, resulting in about 320 Japan aircrafts and 3000 men. To 1943 to 1945, the US began to recapture Japan territory. By 1945, Japan forces weakened and lost most of their navy, its cities were bombed daily and economy collapsed. At the end, the US bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima, causing Japan to surrender.

On August 6 and 9th, the US sent two atomic bombs to the cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. The aftermath killed 150,000 to 246,000 people, most being civilians. This caused Japan to announce surending to the allies. In the perspective of the US, they wanted to minimize American casualties and losses as quickly as possible. They also wanted to show dominance and pressure Japan to surrender. Japan's reaction to the nuclear bombs were very divided. Unfortunately antisurrender sentiment and objections from much of the Japanese military was widespread. Vice Admiral Takijiro Onishi, argued the Japanese "would never be defeated if we were prepared to sacrifice 20,000,000 Japanese lives in a special attack effort." He later committed suicide rather than surrender. As Foreign Minister, Togo was a member of Japan's Cabinet, the government decision-making body. Togo, more than anyone else in the Japanese Cabinet, pushed Japan toward peace. His efforts were restricted by the military to petitioning Russia to help Japan end the war. At the end, the surrender of Japan was announced on broadcast by Emperor Hitohro on 15 August.
