We met Ramavati didi, a SHG member, a goat rearer, mother of 2 boys, and a caretaker of a house of 8 members, who is doing poultry when the community decided to do so because they think they can earn some profit out of it. She does not have time generally to do a business/ livelihood permanently as she lives in Delhi at times, and is busy in goat rearing and taking care of her family and poultry was one of her ways to try out with the community to earn income.
She is not sure about the business, on how much will she earn, how much would it weigh and seemed confused about when she would get the birds.
"Jaise 10 didyo judi hai, sabi didi kehte hai ki murgi palan karte hai, pathi se nahi phuche, sabi didi milake murgi palan karte hai ek bar. Isme kya phaida milta hai, kya nahi milta hai. Ham to pada likha nahi hai, kya sahi hai aur kya galat hai, kya bataye, kya kahe, sabi didi log kar ra hai, usi me ham me karrit hai.

We met Shanti who is an Adhyaksh her SHG (Kajal Saamuh) who enrolled in the poultry program because her family lives hand to mouth with most of their HH expenditure going into purchasing food, there are other HH expenditure piling up as well with her daughter about to get married. What she liked the most about Poultry is it gives her access to quick money, she can sell the birds whenever she wants unlike goats or buffalos and and she doesn't seem to have any large fears or concerns with taking up BYP as she has been rearing desi birds for >25 years now. She is confident that she will be able to recoup her costs from sale of birds.

We met Rita Goutham, a bank sakhi, primary bed winner of her family of 3 who has paid for poultry program because she feels chicks will grow up to 5-6 Kg, and they can make 500-600 Rs per bird and would be profitable.
What she liked the most about Poultry is that poultry will take less daily effort as compared to other cattle rearing like buffalo etc. and her biggest fear/uncertainty about taking up Poultry is whether she will earn profit in the first cycle or not as that will decide whether she would like to continue this or not.

But in my opinion, there is more effort in Buffalo, and goat rearing. In Poultry, there is less effort. If we compare based on the time spent by me, for Buffalo and Goats, we have to spend at least 2 hours. But for poultry, we can just give feed in the morning and evening, we have to spend only about 15-20 minutes in a day or so.

We met Vidhyavati, a heart patient, a survivor trying to make her ends meet in Banjari Suganwa village, who joined the poultry program and has spend 4500 Rs buying feed for the chicks because her husband doesn't give her money and she needs money for her treatment and her children's education.

What she liked the most about Poultry is that it is low cost and low risk business (compared to goatery or rearing a buffalo), she will be able to make at least some money, and it requires lesser labour/efforts. Her biggest fear/uncertainty about taking up Poultry is that feed is expensive (5 chicks have died) and she doesn't know much money she will able to earn.

We met Laxmi didi, a CRP person and adhyaksh of poultry producer group and a housekeeper for 8 members, who joined the poultry program because she did not want to miss an opportunity of starting a livelihood to earn money when it came to her doorstep, and esp from govt.
What she liked the most about poultry is that this is a govt program and she would get feed from govt and while her spend might be higher, she would earn profit from it.
She feared losing on the opportunity of earning more to fulfil the growing financial needs of the house. She is also anxious of knowing what she would spend and what she would earn of this.

Ham dekhna chahta hai ki kitna karcha lagta hai, kitna bachta aur kitna nahi bachta hai.
Jaise ham 1875 Rs jama kiya hai. Aur agar hamko 10,000 Rs lag jayega, aur hamko 15,000 Rs milega, phire bhi hamko faida hi hai.
This is the first time someone is coming and telling us about a livelihood. No one else apart from the Poultry rearing team came to our village previously to talk about livelihoods. Whether I make a profit or loss, I will try for once. I thought if I don’t do it now, I won’t get this opportunity again. Others will get ahead of me.

SHe is yet to receive her chicks and she is still optimistic about her prospects in BYP
