Glad Monster, Sad Monster by Ed Emberley: This story teaches students different emotions and helps them explore their own feelings. Because of this, they can make personal connections to their experiences and communicate their feelings with their families, peers and teachers. I love to use this book to support social/emotional learning!

The book gives examples of where you might see colors such as a blue sky or green grass. It also follows a question and answer format, which is a fun pattern students can easily follow with.

Pete the Cat series by Eric Litwin: As a series, students love to see Pete the Cat in his various adventures! These are patterned books, which helps students transition to independent reading as they become more familiar with the text. It also reinforces age appropriate content such as word recognition and color words. Pete goes through many fun adventures that always keep my student hooked! I read this to my first graders and we sang "I love my white shoes" for the whole school year!

Llama, Llama series by Anna Dewdney: This series provides relatable, age appropriate topics for students to enjoy such as waking up, going to sleep, having a birthday party, going trick or treating and facing a bully at school. As Neuman & Dwyer (2008) suggest, providing students with a series promotes engagement and reading for enjoyment! Students are excited to see the same characters reoccurring throughout this series.

Pigeon series by Mo Willems: In this series, we see Pigeon getting into various escapades. One thing in common across all the books in this series is that Pigeon always has a bit of a melt down. This pattern in the series allows students to use their background knowledge to make inferences while reading and try to problem solve. Also, the feelings Pigeon is having in each book can be developmentally relatable to many students.

Again, we get to see a favorite character in many different situations. All of these situations can promote text-to-self connections. Additionally, this series provides strong vocabulary like mope, moan, sulk, and sigh.

A Chair For My Mother by Vera B Williams: This story teaches children many realistic life lessons they can relate to. It discusses the value of saving and investing money into something you need. It also emphasizes how a community can come together to help those in need. I read this book with my 1st grade class a few years ago when I taught in Troy, NY. Many students made connections about how their families have a change jar they are contributing to. Many also enjoyed sharing jobs they do around the house or for extended family members just like the main character in the story. Also, a few students had experiences of joining together as a community to help their neighbors. This book allowed them to make significant life connections they enjoyed sharing with the class.

This book is fantastic for reading during a planting unit, focusing on how seeds grow. Students can also make connections to various plants they may see, have eaten or have planted with a family member.

What Do You Do with a Tail Like This? by Robin Page and Steve Jenkins: This book is fantastic for connecting to student interests. Almost every child I have ever met adores some kind of animal. This book is a fun and exciting read because each page you have to guess which tail belongs to what animal. It allows students to make inferences based on the tail. Students can connect what they see to background knowledge if they are familiar, or, learn a new animal in the reading process!

Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems: This book follows a clear narrative structure, focusing on story elements such as character, setting, plot, conflict and resolution. Many young students can also make a text-to-self connection through this story. Many children have stuffed animals or items they love and have most likely lost over their years! This book identifies how to problem solve to find the missing stuffed animal, which encourages students to retrace the steps of the character and problem-solve on their own to figure out where it is.
