American entrepreneurs, especially in northeastern cities, grew interested in the American Experiment and railroads slowly became a part of everyday society. Railroads and canals were competing bitterly, but bt the 1840's, railroads were gradually took over all other modes of transport. They were the most efficient in the Northeast. The south didn't have half as much as them. But, railroads left no region untouched. They helped further the connection between the Northwest and the South.

This also caused increased white settlement in the Northwest; therefore, this impacted the North region the most because it increased market and production and settlement.

The communication revolution allowed instant communication between distant cities, and tied the nation together like never before. The telegraph created a stronger tension between the North and the South. This was caused because the telegraph lines were far more extensive in the North than in the South. Which caused the North to be more connected to the Northwest, thus causing the Northwest to separate further from the South.

Many were recent immigrants or widows/orphans or victims of native. This was the worst for free blacks mainly in the North who were paid little or had no access to jobs at all. This created a whole new social class of extremely impoverished people who could only hinder and not contribute to the economy or society.
