Maddy- SETT Framework assists In the development and implementation of an AT plan as well as with date collection. SETT Framework is all about promoting students to collaborate in making decisions and engage with other students while being able to use assistive technology services if needed. SETT has 4 parts of framework being, strengths, environment, tasks, and tools. These steps allow you to ask questions giving answers to data for that student. SETT creates a specific way to ensure that the AT plan is being used correctly and that students are having success. An AT plan or assistive technology plan is for students with an IEP who benefit from using some form of technology to help them. SETT and AT assist each other by allowing students with an IEP to use their technology services while collaborating with other students to make decisions together. It also helps collect data on the students by seeing how they work with other students, how they work with the technology, and if they need any more services or assistance.

Maddy- The pandemic has had a big impact on the concept of an effective learning environment. One positive thing that came out of the pandemic was the use of technology in education. Education became all technology based, this allowed teachers to explore new apps, websites or other services that could be beneficial to the students. Some students learned that they work better with some of these technology services. On the other hand some students really struggled when using technology. The pandemic also had many negative effects as well. One big negative is that it was very hard to keep the students engaged and paying attention on the screen. They may have had many distractions at home that effected there learning. Many students benefit from the in person learning where they get to learn using different styles and hand on tasks hat are so easy to do in person. Many students struggled over the screen and became very behind academically and socially because of it.

Maddy- There are a few strategies that can help teams consider low tech tools that can still effectively meet student needs. The first strategy being research. Researching different low tech tools can be a very useful thing to find information about different low tech tools and how they can be used in the classroom to help student needs. A second strategy would be making connections with other teachers or educators that have used low tech tools. This can help you learn about new tools and even different ways to use tools you may already know about. Third, bring the tools found during research and talking with other educators to your team to talk about if it can be used to help students in need and how it can be used.

Maddy- I really enjoyed watching this video. This topic relates to the focus of our class because it talks about the importance of having those specific necessary tools to complete a task properly. Just like a fighter pilot flying a plane where they need specific technology tools and other things to ensure successful flying, students with IEP’s need specific tools to be able to successfully complete their work or everyday tasks. Another similarity, is that fighter jets were stopped being made with an average size area that can only fit an average size person. Just like how things work in some classrooms, where things can be catered to the “average” student. This leaves out many students who do not fit under that umbrella. By changing the fighter jet design to fit everyone, this allowed for many more people to be involved and successful. By changing our ways in the classroom and doing things for all students instead of the average student, we will see all our students succeed.

During the pandemic teachers had to think of other ways to teach their content to their students. As teachers we now are able to effectively teach using different kinds of technology. Some students still struggle with learning just through technology which brings up my next point on engagement. When teaching through google meet, zoom, etc. from home it might be hard to keep some students engaged. At home there tends to be more distractions then there is at school. Some students gain more information when not distracted from things going on at home and instead to better when learning in the classroom.

Through this Framework, the development of an AT plan can come naturally just through the everyday learning/necessity of a student within the classroom. Through this lens, it allows teachers of all kinds to determine how to provide the proper AT needs of the student to not only benefit strengths but to improve areas where a student is still developing in. This Framework works well with data collection because through understanding these elements, designing a proper AT plan can bring forward changes in student data such as task completion, time on task, as well as improvement within their behavior regarding a difficult task.

Through the pandemic, the concept of an "effective learning environment" has been challenged because that "new" learning environment can be something far from a student's least restrictive environment. Over the course of these few years, students have had to use whatever space they found the most conductive in their living situation. Now, places for sleep or recreation are utilized as a classroom, places for eating are classrooms, any room can now potentially become a classroom. This creates a situation where learning can become a secondary thought depending on what else is in the room. As great as technology is in supporting the needs of learners, at times it could pose as students' greatest hurdle to use effectively. If there are other technologies within this new "classroom" students may get distracted or just not pay any attention to class in connection to other external stimuli creating a very restrictive environment to their education.

The pandemic had both positive and negative impacts on education and the concept of an effective learning environment. Some positive impacts were that teachers and students alike were forced to incorporate technology into learning. While some had a hard time, others found that they had more success in a virtual setting being able to work independently in an environment of their choice. Another positive was that much of the work was asynchronous so students could do their work at a time that worked best for them. A middle ground that was both a pro and a con was that parents were now more involved. A pro was that the parents now knew what the students had to do and cold keep on top of any assignments that needed to be done and cold assist their child. The con however, was that now parents were in the "classroom" and were critical of the teachers. This put strain on to the teachers and caused a rift between teachers and parents. The negative impact was that it was hard to keep students engaged in learning when they could have a tv next to them or a different tab open on their computer. It was also a new technology that many people had never used so there was a learning curve of trying to figure it out.

On the positive side, students had to adapt to learn through all of this new technology such as Zoom, Google meet, and Webex platforms. Technology was very much integrated into the students, teachers, and parents everyday lives due to virtual learning. It opened students eyes to a whole new world about technology. On the negative side, some students could not fully adapt to the distance learning environment. Students would not log onto the meeting platform for the day, some students struggled with learning through a computer, and some students would be on a different page and would be playing games on their computers instead. Overall, there are a lot of pro and cons but everyone had to figure it out on their own and see what worked best and how they could get through this difficult time.

Another strategy is to experiment which tech tools work and which tech tools are not as effective for the students. This video connects to the focus in our class because not every student learns the same and all students have different needs. There is not one student who is a replica of the other. All students learn differently, take tests differently, solve math problems differently and more, there is not an "average student." All students vary on all different types of learning and how they approach learning. Every student has strengths and also weaknesses as well. Learning environments need to be created based on meeting the needs of all students to ensure that students grow instead of staying at the "average" level.

I've seen this video a few times now and I love it. The relation of the cockpit and education is so accurate. If we continue to try to build a mold that is suitable for every child...we will be here forever. There is no such thing as an average student or a universal design that will benefit every child the same way. This comparison heavily relates to our class because each student that needs AT needs something different. There is not one tool that will benefit all. Each student has different needs so there for they will need different tech tools. As teachers it is important for us to really consider the needs of each individual student. Take it student by student instead of creating one tool to benefit all.

The pandemic had a huge impact as to what makes an effective learning environment. An effective learning environment has vastly changed because we have become more dependent on technology. The pandemic made us transition from pencil and paper to electronic devices. This is both an advantage and disadvantage. It is effective because students are given more access to resources. However, it is also a disadvantage because looking at a screen for long periods of time can make someone tired. Students were not given a choice as they were forced to go on Zoom, Google Meets or Webex.

The pandemic has changed learning overall. It has had positive effects, such as being exposed to various online resources and tools, as well as using video chat services. this allowed schools to keep teaching students and provide them with the information they need. However, it has caused a negative effect as many of the kids are computer obsessed. Students have a harder time writing things down, struggle with keep things neat and organized and prefer to just play educational games on the computer. It is great that they want to play fun educational games, but it created a less motivated student in the physical classroom.

Many tools can be created and effective to fit the students needs. Teachers can speak to one another about the observations they have made about the student in their classroom. With knowing the student's needs, another strategy would be to research any assistive technology that would help the student.

I enjoyed watching this video on how not all students are the same. Not all students learn in the same way or at the same pace. This relates to class because as educators we are supposed to teach the students in ways that they learn best, this includes making accommodations, highlighting their strong skills, and more. We need to set the students up for success in a way they best learn, so they can succeed.
