A traditional quinceañera is both a religious and social event that emphasizes the importance of the family and society in the life of the young person. The celebration starts with a mass that is attended by the girl, her family, and godparents. A reception, or party, follows the mass in which friends and relatives are invited. There is food, music, and dancing at the reception. The girl is accompanied by her “court” of damas, also known as her “maids of honor” and chambelánes, or “chamberlains.”
