Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican ancestry living in other places, especially the United States. It is acknowledged internationally in many other cultures. The multi-day holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.

I learned...When thinking of music and dance in the Mexican culture, a colorful Mariachi band might come to mind. Mariachi is a folk style of music traditionally consisting of 5 musicians wearing a “charro" suit. They are most memorably heard playing a popular song called “La Cucaracha”, which translates to “the Cockroach”, on the street, at festivals or in restaurants Folks songs called corridos will tell a story of the Mexican Revolution, pride, romance, poverty, politics or crime. Other traditional music includes the Banda, Norteño and Ranchera styles.

Means fifteen years celebration. It is also called quinceaños. This is a Mexican celebration for a girl’s 15th birthday. It signifies her passage from childhood to adulthood. A traditional quinceañera is both a religious and social event that emphasizes the importance of the family and society in the life of the young person. The celebration starts with a mass that is attended by the girl, her family, and godparents. A reception, or party, follows the mass in which friends and relatives are invited. There is food, music, and dancing at the reception. The girl is accompanied by her “court” of damas, also known as her “maids of honor” and chambelánes, or “chamberlains.”
http://abbylarson.com/gradproject/Rites_of_Passage.html

Two pivotal periods mark modern Mexican history--the battle for independence from Spain from 1810 to 1821 and then, a century later in 1910, the decade-long Mexican Revolution. Monuments marking these events and the national heroes associated with them are found across the country in towns small and large. Hundreds of other monuments honor the much-loved mid-19th century President Benito Juarez, who led the country during a French-backed attempt to impose an Austrian archduke as Mexican emperor.
