The Helix Nebula was the first planetary nebula discovered to have cometary knots. Cometary knots are believed to be a common feature in the evolution of planetary nebulae. They are generally larger than the Solar System. They have cusps and tails. There are an estimated 20,000 cometary knots in the Helix Nebula.
