The story starts off with a beautiful princess search for a suitable husband. After her father had rejected many princes, two noble men appeared before him. They were Son Tinh, the spirit of the Mountains, and Thuy Tinh, the spirit  of the Waters. After a small competition, Son Tinh beat Thuy Tinh, and Son Tinh won the princess' hand. To try and defeat Son Tinh, Thuy Tinh sent great waves almost reaching the tops of the mountains for days, but did not succeed.
