John Brown, a helper from the underground railroad, moved to Kansas which was a pro-slave state in the South, after he moved to Kansas he decided a retaliation was needed. Near a river in Kansas, Brown and others lured men out of their house and killed them, which made the South mad at the retaliation going against slavery.

The states that fought in the election were very opinionated about their beliefs of what should happen with the slavery problem. When one of the candidates from the North won, it was the first time working against the South.

Nat Turner's Rebellion

A slave named Nat Turner decided to rebel against several plantations, this retaliation was the bloodiest that was recorded. The Virginia lawmakers decided to take away more of the rights from slaves and this was the start of the Fugitive Slave Act.

John Browns Raid

John Brown took some men with him to a raid on the federal army and arsenal at Harper's Ferry in an effort to capture and confiscate the arms located there. They then distributed them among the slaves and took the slaves to fight against a small force of Marines, where John Brown and his men were captured.

The Battle at Fort Sumter

Abraham Lincoln sent out troops to Fort Sumter and began having outposts there, then Abraham Lincoln sent out fresh supplies for the troops. The Confederate warships turned back to convey to Fort Sumter and opened a stronghold, after this fight the Civil War was underway.

Lincoln was a North candidate and Douglas was also a North candidate so while they were debating people wanted to see how they would address slavery and their opinions about slavery, which told a lot about which side they would be on. Later, after Lincoln was elected president, Douglas made some questionable debates regarding different subjects that made people question his ability to be president.
