If the U.K. leaves the EU, a hard border between the Republic of Ireland, an EU country, would be established. The sight of British troops manning this infamous border would surely reignite the violent conflict between the Irish Nationalists and British backed Unionists. The soft border promoting free movement of goods and people must be preserved in order to prevent a resurgence of The Troubles. Additionally, Northern Ireland’s economy is dependent on EU trade. 50% of both Northern Ireland’s imports and exports involve the EU. NI’s main industry of manufacturing would collapse if it had to face high tariffs in order to enter the EU market.

Finally, accusations that Northern Ireland is mooching off the EU are false. Northern Ireland contributes 374m euros to the EU and receives 320m euros in subsidies and funds from the EU. This makes Northern Ireland a net contributor to the EU.
