Alexis, Jing Rung, Celine, Kai Xuan

I agree that parents should control the amount of time their teenage child spends on gaming. Teenagers are still growing and are unaware of how to manage their time responsibly. (Point) They may not understand the importance of planning our time wisely and might waste it on unimportant things like gaming. (E) Without parental supervision, they may get addicted unintentionally which may affect them in the long run. For example, as shown in the video, the young girl’s mother was repeatedly calling her daughter to eat breakfast, but she feigned ignorance because she was so engrossed in her game. Furthermore, after her mom took her IPad away because of her poor mannerism, she threw a tantrum. This shows that upon getting addicted, relationships could be hindered, and social connections are bound to grow more distant. Thus, I think that parents should control the time their teenage child spends on gaming. (L)

Lucas,Sonam,Calvinn,Eugene

I agree that parents should control the amount of time their teenage child spends on gaming.

Parents need to control the time their children spend playing video games so as to have a healthy mix of activities in their lives. Many studies show that excessive gaming is associated with poor grades, lowered physical involvement and sleep disturbances. Through putting limits on video game playing, parents will enable their children to improve time management skills and encourage them to do other important things such as studying, exercising or socializing. Such education is vital for the children’s comprehensive growth and well-being. However, if a teenager spends all his day long while playing games he may ignore his assignments or fail to participate in physical exercises which can adversely affect his academic performance and health. On the other hand, putting reasonable restrictions on playing video games can help a kid lead a healthier life and make it easier for them to live better lives in general.

Transition: Of course this doesn’t mean fun should be forbidden but rather gaming controlled since teenagers have a need for both balance and satisfaction concerning family members’ responsibility in this area.

Braynt, Rayanna, Yuxuan, Nikko

I agree that parents should control the amount of time their teenage child spends on gaming.

Firstly, many games today feature themes such as violence, adult-rated material and other explicit content which <s>etcetera</s> can cause mental harm <s>in their mindset</s> and their welfare in general <s>overall</s>. Children are still growing, and when they are exposed to inappropriate things, it's no surprise for them to normalise these things and react in a certain and surprising way. If one delves into the realm of the perverse gaming world without any parental supervision (focus on the Qn) <s>social media or online platforms too much, and if he or she enters the part of inappropriate entertainment, </s>it could be traumatising for them and could affect a part of their mental health and growth. Good to give examples of certain inappropriate games that young teenagers are exposed to and it effects

Secondly, teenagers can easily enter a downward spiral of gaming addiction if there is a lack of parental control (Point) <s>without the supervision of parents and without the control of parents, their children's mindset could be affected in a sense of</s> (dont repeat the 'mindset' idea again) When they dont have access to their gaming gadgets they may act out by being rebellious, <s>being </s>rude, and <s>have the impression of </s>not being well-mannered. Examples like if the parents give them the freedom all the time, they would start being disrespectful to them as they feel a sense of power to control their parents. Additionally, the frequent use of mobile devices can cause a sense of rudeness and not well mannered especially when having family dinner time. Can you see how many times this 'rudeness' idea is repeated? CHANEG TO EFFECTS OF GAMING ADDICTION: Teenagers may throw tantrums, show no regard for authority, skip meals/ family bonding activitres, become a social recluse etc...

On the other had, other people do agree that parent should not control their students. Parents giving their children freedom may be a pro<s>s</s>, as they can <s>develop to</s> be more independent and be more curious erm curious about what?. Independence is a key for a child's growth and success, if a child relies on their parents and peers very often, what would happen to them in the future if they get placed into the current realm where everything is fast-paced? Be specific! what realm? the real working world?

In conclusion, I find that parents should control the amount of time their teenage child spends on gaming.

Organisation issues; the point about explicit content is very good but the second point is too repetitive... some word choice causes confusion 5-6/10 marks

Audrey, sijing , yantong ,yi jia

I agree that parents should control amount of time their teenage child spends on gaming.

Firstly, when children play games for an excessive amount of time, kids get too immersed in the world of fiction. (P) this could lead to a strained relation ship with parents and deterioration of academic endeavors. This could be detrimental to a child’s future as doing well in school is important to a child’s development and life. I think another E you can consider is 'teens may get unhinged from reality and become more and more isolated from the real world, don't want to socialise etc...'

Secondly, A cause of concern for parents would be their child's health and mental well being. Being online for long periods of time may lead to deterioration of their eyesight and they may stay up late which will impact their mental? (Point states 'mental well-being' but EEEs did no address this) development. Not only that, children may fall asleep in class or not be able to digest what teachers say as they are lack sleep and are unable to focus.

On the other hand, others may think that it restricts freedom and the privacy of teens when parents restrict the amount of time spent on gaming.<s> Which</s> This may lead to teens becoming more rebellious as they feel constrained and this builds a sense of mistrust between parent and child not trusted. This would ultimately have the opposite result intended as parents <s>intentions would be to</s> restrict the time spent on gaming so that children have more time for other activities but instead teens end up <s>spending their time</s> rebelling against their parents and going down the wrong path. ...of gaming addiction?

In conclusion, I still believe that parents should Control the time spent by their kids on gaming but doing it moderately and communicating with their teens on why they are doing so.

7.5-8 marks; thoughtful and generally devp; can be better devp with the right vocab and completing the EEEs

Yuewei, Louise, Yimo, Ashley

I agree that parents should control the amount of time their teenager spends on gaming.

Firstly, some teenagers do not have the discipline to stop themselves hence leading them to be carried away and not watching out for the time they are wasting. Therefore i think parents should step in and remind or control their teenagers from gaming too much. I myself get too carried away when i game with my friends, and i often forget to look at the time. Therefore, by my mum controlling my gaming limits gets me back on track. Point 1 and 2 are too similar; Point 1 can focus more on 'time management skills' + E: important life skill in tertiary education /future career + E: healthy balance of work and play + deter effects of addictions

Secondly, parents controlling the amount of time their teenagers spend can allow them to be more focused on their more important priorities. such as? EEEs seem incomplete; Include 'allot my time more wisely on other important tasks such as physical exercise, socialising, revision, enrichment activities, hobbies etc...'Parents can install time limits to each game, so their teenagers will have to stop at some point of time and go back to studying if they want more screen time. By doing so, teenagers will be able to finish their priorities while still being able to play games.

On the other hand, i can understand why others would disagree to parents controlling their teenage child’s gaming time. If teenagers do not have their gaming time controlled, they would have to learn how to manage their time well to ensure that their homework or other chores are done. This can teach them a sense of responsibility and help them with making sure they use their time efficiently. More EEEs would be good here: inculcate a sense of independence, maturity, training them to transition to be better adults etc

In conclusion, i agree that parents should control their teenage child’s gaming time. If gaming time is not controlled, the teenagers may end up not focusing on their studies and failing them, or they could lose sleep from gaming too much which can cause their health to deteriorate.

Response has some devp and vocab is still too simple 6/10m

Alexis, Celine, Jing rung, Kai xuan

I agree that parents should control the amount of time their teenagers are still growing and are unaware of how to manage their time responsibly. Firstly, since teenagers are not fully matured yet, they may not understand the importance of planning their time wisely and instead, waste their time on unimportant things such as gaming. (only 1 E?)

Secondly, if teenagers spend too much time on gaming without the restrictions from parents, their (Point should eb 'Health') lifestyle may be affected. For example, if all they do is just spend time on their devices, they would not even bother going out or trying out other activities. Small things such as jogging at the park to keep fit or going out with friends, they may rather stay at home and game. This may cause them to miss out in a lot of opportunities in life and lead a sedentary lifestyle. (More EEEs here)

On the other hand, others may argue that not restricting their gaming habits may be beneficial. This is because gaming acts as a stress-reliever, which help teenagers to relax. Furthermore, there are games out there that are educational such as Duolingo and Fun Maths, which can help enrich learning outside <s>of</s> the classroom. This helps to broaden our horizons, and gain valuable skillsets or virtues. (very good Disagree paragraph)

However, I still believe that parents should restrict their children within reasonable constraints. (Conclusion can add 'the dangers of gaming addiction outweigh the benefits of gaming or gaming addiction can creep surreptitiously into their daily life, etc...) 7-8 marks

yiji, sijing , yantong , Audrey

I would encourage my friend to continue their goal of stopping their gaming addiction. I would try to introduce new hobbies that I can do with my friend so that she can occupy her time with more productive activities and forget about their games. For example, I had a friend that was addicted to mobile legends and was trying to get rid of her addiction. I tried to assist her by getting her to play badminton with me in her weekends instead of staying at home and playing games. This helped her unlock as new interest as she became passionate about sports which is beneficial to her physical health and slowly, she became less interested in spending her whole weekend playing mobile legends instead of doing home work or other activities.

This shows that people are able to cut off their addiction if they set their mind to it and are supported by other around them when they are tempted to go back to their old ways.

For example, I can recommend him to go to places in Singapore like McRitchie Reservoir, where there is a nice park that he can go for a nice walk. This will keep him healthy and active as well as curb his gaming addiction.

Another option is to hangout with his friends and catch up on life instead of playing games with them online. This will help to forge a deeper bond than a superficial bond through games. Getting him and his friends to do more meaningful activities rather than fixing themselves on gaming.

Eugene,lucas,sonam,calvinn

I wholehearly agree. For example, when a friend is addicted to gaming, as a friend, I should be supportive. It will commence by speaking to them regarding the situation. This would make them aware that I am concerned and want to assist them, not criticize or break their feelings. An example of this would be setting achievable objectives for them gradually decreasing their gaming time each week. For example, each week they could reduce the number of hours they spend playing one hour less in order to test it out. Similarly, there are other leisure activities we could do together like participating in sports, taking strolls or getting into new hobbies altogether. Actually having a plan can go a long way in helping them break free from the habit

I would also try to get them involved in activities that don’t involve gaming. This means that I would try to invite them to hang out together with other good friends, go to the movies, or possibly have a enoyable at the arcade like timezone . This way, webbcan have fun and meet new people without a screen involved. I would remind them of the stuff they used to love doing before gaming took over, like playing an instrument, drawing, or reading, and encourage them to reconnect with these interests. By being there for them and showing I care, I can really help them make some positive changes.

On the other hand, some people might say that trying to control how much my friend games could be annoying and push them away. A lot of people game to relax or get away from stress, and if I try to make them stop, they might just get mad and resist even more. Gaming is also a way for a lot of people to hang out with friends online, and forcing them to change could ruin that. Instead of making them stop, it might be better to help them find a balance, so they can still enjoy gaming while keeping up with other responsibilities.

Overall,it is essential to respect decisions made by my friend, however, assisting them in dealing with gaming addiction is the right thing to do. I can show them that life is not only about video games by creating a platform of open conversations and recommending fun options. This will be very helpful in maintaining such people’s balance. The knowledge and empathy I have will go a long way in ensuring they learn better ways of using their time, and thus it would be crucial for me to be patient and comprehensive as I give friendship services.

Sadhana, Phyllis

I would suggest to my friend to set a strict time limit for thier gaming console usage. For example, my friend can limit her daily screen time to 30 mins by using an alarm. This way, my friend will not have hours of screen time daily spent gaming endlessly. My friend can instead opt for hobbies that do not involve screens such as exercising or cooking. This makes sure that she would not game 24/7

Secondly, I would suggest my friend to surrender her phone to a friend or trusted adult whenever she wants to work on something such as homework. This ensures that she would not get distracted by her gaming console while doing her work. If she does not have anyone to give her console to, she can keep her console in a safe place far away from her work area so that she would not try to grab it.

Rauana btant baye nikko n yuxuan

Having a gaming addiction is something extremely hard to overcome, especially at a young age where we tend to prioritise convenience and comfort,<s> in which makes it hard for us to step up and prevent out harmful behaviours and addictions</s> making us easily tempted to turn to gaming to escape the daily hustle and bustle of life.

Firstly, limiting mobile screen time and seeking for other activities to do instead is an effective way to overcome ones gaming addiction. Experts on teenagers’ health agree that school-aged children should not spend more than two hours each day in front of any screen. However, some teenagers may not be able to endure time limit <s>measurement</s>s and find <s>a way </s>loopholes to s<s>till</s> access mobile games. To reduce temptation, occupying oneself with other activities is a way to cope. Nowadays, most teenagers love playing sports such as badminton and basketball. Engaging in physical activities can be a great way to balance screen time and promote overall well-being. Additionally, encouraging hobbies like reading or creative arts can provide enriching alternatives to screen-based entertainment.

Secondly, seeking therapy and counselling is another way to solve gaming addiction problems. As I may not be a highly trainer professional in assisting and giving advice about addiction to my friend, I can suggest encouraging my friend to sign up for a therapy session outside of school. Therapy is a common way to handle tough situations and problems that a person is facing, and in this case, a gaming addiction <s>which m</s>ay be detrimental to his/hers mental and physical health in the long term. However, therapy may be costly and perhaps my friend may not be able to afford it. Another alternative is to seek for the school counsellor, in which also gives him/her the necessary support and advice.

Vocab is good; examples not really personal; some structure issues

[ Lucas, Sonam, Calbinn, Eugene ]

Yes, I do believe that people are becoming distant to their families because of technology and its current state.

Firstly, the over-reliance on digital communication can sometimes lead to less physical interaction, which affects the quality of relationships and emotional connections. For example, some people might interact on social media compared to their families, which could lead to arguments and lack of understanding towards each other as they don’t learn much about their daily encounters.

Secondly, social media can be distracting, and people might spend more time interacting with their screens than with family members in the same room. This would make family members feel more distant and less relatable. For example, some people are so engrossed that they do not have any sense as to what is happening around them or what their families are interacting with, making them feel lost, irritable when confronted with and ultimately damaging family relations.

However, it is not all bad as families can share photos, videos, and messages to update about their lives, which can help maintain a sense of closeness and feel related with one another while not being physically there. An example of this is when a family member is overseas, they can share photos or videos and even talk about how they feel and how they are doing, this also makes people feel like they are there with them. All in all, whether technology makes people more distant or helps them stay connected depends on how it’s used and the individual circumstances of each family.

Outdoor activities such as taking a stroll in a park, have been scientifically proven to <s>encourage</s> offer health benefits and promote better mental well-being over time. This is because as they are taking a walk, they can enjoy a much needed change of scenery and immerse themselves in the lush greenery <s>admire the beautiful scenery in the wide range of green spaces,</s> which can help passersby feel a sense of solace and stress relief. I find this <s>stress relief </s>method very calming and effective when there is a lot of weight on my shoulders and life gets daunting. Furthermore, reconnecting with nature makes me feel grounded and rejuvenated. After I reflected upon my experience of walking in the park for the first time, I realised the importance of taking time off my phone and appreciating the green spaces around me. This method could also work the same way for my friend, and inculcate a healthier alternative of a hobby.

Secondly, I would suggest my friend ask other members of his/her family, to supervise his/her screen time or usage of electronics temporarily. This is because even if my friend gets tempted or carried away with using his/her devices for long periods, he/she would be restricted from doing so which allows him/her to be focused on other things, that are more meaningful or important. For example, if my friend has set a specific goal to only have 2-3 hours of screen time in a day, there would be somebody by his/her side to remind him/her to turn away from his devices if he/she gets carried away. Gradually, he/she would be independent and wouldn’t need somebody to look after him/herself. As a result, this would minimise his/her usage of electronic devices, and inculcate discipline, which could also be used for other aspects of his/her life.

Lastly, I would suggest my friend to find a hobby that genuinely interests them. Engaging in a new hobby provides a healthier alternative to excessive screen time and straining of the eyes <s>and make them more active</s>. Encouraging them to explore new interests would help them discover new passions that provide greater fulfillment than gaming. They can <s>could</s> find any interest such as doing arts and crafts, learning a new musical instrument, or mastering a new skill, these activities would keep them occupied serving as a distraction. Over time, it would replace the time and satisfaction that gaming once provided. This would not only reduce their gaming addiction habits but also improve their overall quality of life by fostering personal growth and well being.

In conclusion, supporting a friend to overcome gaming addiction requires empathy, consistent support and encouraging them to set realistic goals, establish a balanced daily routine, and explore fulfilling hobbies. By implementing these suggestions, they can gradually regain control over their life, reduce their dependency on gaming, and develop healthier habits that promote personal growth and overall well-being. At the same time, we can encourage and understand them, making a significant difference in their journey to overcome addiction.

Georgina, Naomi , Sadhana, Phyllis

Yes, we agree that the use of technology has caused people to be more distant from one another. One reason for this is because of our over reliance on technology for communication. Instead of talking to each other, many choose to send texts and emojis to react to and communicate with others, even if they are in the same room.

Secondly, technology distracts us from the real world. How many times have we seen a family sitting at the same table to eat together with everyone on their respective devices, scrolling Instagram or watching a movie on Netflix? Im sure this is a familiar scene at the dinner tables in our own homes. This causes the relationships between family members to grow more distant over time due to a lack of connection and communication, leading to a poor family relationship.

Of course, its not all bad, as technology can help us connect with others around the world. For example, there are many groups online with members around the world, bonding through their shared interests. This helps foster new relationships with people of different cultures, helping us to form a deeper understanding of each other.

Alexis, Kai Xuan, Celine, Jing Rung

I disagree that the use of technology has caused people to be more distant.

Firstly, with the continuous evolution of technology, it is getting more efficient at the end of the day. Technology has been making communication with loved ones a breeze.

Applications like WhatsApp and telegram permits people to video call with their friends and lives ones from anywhere, even when far apart from one another. With busy lifestyles, technology allows us to maintain our connections with one another. For example, some parents may be at work for the whole day, only returning home after their children have gone to bed. However, with the help of technology, parents and children are able to maintain communication with one another throughout the day, making communication more efficient. Thus, I find that technology has the ability to make communication with one another a breeze.

Secondly, Online communities can play a significant role in fostering connections among individuals with shared interests.

Platforms such as Facebook groups, and Discord have created spaces for people to connect over shardd topics and hobbies.

These online interactions can provide a sense of belonging and support, especially for individuals who may feel isolated at home.

For instance, individuals who often feel left out or tend to keep to themselves are able to share experiences and advice with others online who may be facing similar challenges.

Thus, I find that technology can unite individuals who share common interests and experiences.

However, others may argue that the use of technology does not cause people to be distant from each other. This is because people can bond through the use of technology. For example, people often get together to game and also utilize social media to contact other people. For instance, people who are studying or working overseas have to rely on technology to contact their friends or family back home, increasing the opportunities for interaction. Not to forget, gaming or watching videos with friends or family is also a usage of technology. Through all these activities, people are bonding, communicating, and spending quality time with each other. Therefore, through the use of technology, people are interacting with each other and spending time together.

Personally, I find myself more distant from my friends and family with the use of technology. In schools, during recess, there would always be more people glued to the screens of their phones than people talking to their friends. This shows that students would rather spend time on social media, games and more rather than using the time to connect and bond with their friends, limiting their chances to bond With this rising issue, to limit usage of technology, schools have decided for students to keep their phones in their lockers and would only be able to access it at the end of the day. Though knowing the punishment if caught with their phone during school hours, it is still proven futile as many have still kept their phones with them or brought two phones to lock one up and keep the other. In Singapore, the government has been encouraging events for people to enjoy without the usage of phones as much .

In conclusion, I still believe that the use of technology is making us more distant from each other. I hope that with the government and schools efforts, people would be more connected to one another and not spend so much time on technology. With the ever-evolving technology, it has truly become a double edged sword in today's society.

Nabila, Richard, Vainawie

I agree as there are many real life instances where real life interactions has been replaced with technology which makes us more distant. For example, whenever im at a restaurant 80-90% of the customers use their phones instead of interacting with each other, asking how their day was. Not only that, in school I observe that many students use their phones during recess instead of talking to each other which makes them technologically inclined to their phones. Personally, I am also a victim of being technologically inclined and only using my phone during family gatherings which makes my social interaction to deplete and being distant with my family.

However, others may argue that technology has not made us distant but bring us closer to one another. For example, through the efficiency of algorithms on social media, many political issues will be made aware to the public and may use e-payments to donate or fund their causes. Also, many will be able to contact their loved ones and family no matter where they are which creates a relationship despite the distance.

In conclusion I agree that technology has made us more distant to others.

For me, I do think that the use of technology has caused people to be more distant from one another.

Firstly, the consistent usage of technology can cause unhealthy relationships with families and even friends. Reasons ranging from getting interrupted by their phones to getting distracted with their online games can cause the disruption of relationships as it looks like their priority is to finish their game rather than spending time with their loved ones. Personally, when I was still a Primary School Student, I would get distracted by my personal devices and would not communicate with my family. After realising that family and friends are more important than mobile devices from many reminders and lectures from videos i stumble through across social media platforms, I became more considerate and appreciate my time with my family and friends. Through this, our relationships became everlasting and we became closer.

Secondly, with all of the new features installed for communicating with each other online, the relationship between each other would start to distant and be dreadful. Personally, I would like to talk to others face-to-face as we can get to understand each other better and to get closer to each other, whereas for online wise, if texting is being use for communication, you wouldn't know the other party's body language and feelings. Overall, I find that relationships can start drifting apart and could cause some problems.

However, some might disagree that the use of technology has caused people to be more distant. They agree that communicating online is better as examples could be range from being convenient, to being a good alternative for people who are introverted and less communicative.

QISTAN, SIMON, MENG SEE

I agree that the use of technology has caused people to become more distant from one another.

With the rise of smartphones, social media, and instant messaging apps, people are increasingly interacting with each other through screens rather than face-to-face. For example, families and friends may be sitting together in the same room, yet each person is engrossed in their own device, scrolling through social media or texting someone else instead of engaging in conversation with those physically present.

This shift in communication patterns has led to a decrease in meaningful, in-person interactions. While technology allows us to stay connected with people who are far away, it often comes at the cost of ignoring those who are near. The depth and quality of relationships can suffer when interactions are reduced to short, impersonal messages or superficial exchanges online, rather than genuine, heartfelt conversations.

Thus, while technology has undoubtedly made communication more convenient, it has also contributed to a growing sense of isolation and distance between individuals, even if they are physically close.
