Then Will and his friend Chester find a tunnel behind the bookshelves in the basement. They go through the tunnel and find the colony which is basically an underground city. They are caught wandering around by the colony police and get put in prison. Will learns he is actually from the colony and was adopted by his topsoil parents. Will's real family comes and picks him up from prison. His real family takes him to their house in the colony. He then meets his younger brother Cal, his Grandma Malcoy, and his Uncle Tam, all family he never knew he had. They tell him about how his real mom escaped to the topsoil with Will and how the Styx (the government of the colony) to this day are trying to find and kill her. Later that night Will and Cal go to a bar were they meet Uncle Tam's gang which includes Imigo, Jessie Shingles, and Joe Waits. They also see Crawfly, the Styx, who has been trying to prove Tam has been sneaking up top for years. Another day Uncle Tam and Will devise a plan to save Chester from being banished to the deep (deep in the earth) and escape up top by going through the eternal city.  When Will and Chester get to the entrance to the eternal city then Cal shows up. They are attacked by the Styx and his topsoil sister Rebecca. Chester gets captured but Will and Cal keep going and make it up top. Then they decide to go to the deep  because the only things from Will's topsoil life he misses are Chester and his dad which are in the deep. The topsoil isn't what Cal dreamed it would be so he wants to join Will to go to the deep. On there way back then they get lost but uncle Tam and Imigo come to their rescue. Then the Styx, led by Crawfly, attack them. They allow kids to drink underage and promote fighting. They "snatch" people and turn them into slaves. The main food: grubs, mushrooms and rats, doesn't sound very appealing to me. I inferred it's Rebecca because she pulled off her scarf and began singing "You are my sunshine' which she always sung in the book. He was hungry but when he saw that there was a grub on his plate he thought maybe it was a mistake.
