16th September

On my first day I arrived five minutes before nine to the room (after talking to the Head Teacher).
The students were waiting for me, as they had been talking about me and that I was going to join them for a time. They were very happy about my presence there.
At that time they had been dealing with Religious Studies (it is a Catholic Kindergarten) and they had to draw and colour the gospel they read before.
The teacher told me that on their best days, they can work on two acivities in 30 minutes (the time I have for my classes). However, it took them 45 minutes to finish and start putting their things away to have breakfast.
The room is big enough for 30 students and one adult. However, there is a boy with autistic diagnostic and his therapeutic companion is always there (sometimes his special education teacher is there, too), so the amount of students was reduced to 24.
They have a calendar, and a schedule that they put together every day. They also have a a poster with their names for them to copy if they do not remember.

They had tea, milk and water (they can choose what to drink) and pizza.
This was a particularly different day, the articulation programme was starting (school teachers and Head Teachers show the kindergarten students the school's places, schedules, and ways of working).
At 9.15, the school's Vice Head Teacher entered the room and took the kids to the school and they went to talk to two first grade teachers about the school objects they are going to use next year.

23rd September
When I entered the room, the students were writing on their calendar the remaining birthdays from September (Matteo, the 24th, and Franco, the 27th).
At 9 o'clock, they told me that they were celebrating Spring Day making a "sanguchometro" (a very long sandwich with jam and cheese). They were very happy about it! They started taking their chairs to the music room and the adults took the tables (as they are heavier).
The adults took knives and started cutting the bread, and put some mayonnaise on them. Then, the children put on the jam first and then the cheese.
When they finished, they went to the kitchen and took the cups and bread bowls. The adults cut the sandwiches and served some Coca Cola or water depending on what the kids wanted.
Up to now, non of the lessons I observed were similar on content, nor context. However, I feel really great with the teacher and the students. They make me feel welcome and comfortable.

I had planned a lot of activities, and luckily, the teacher allowed me to take fifteen extra minutes for me to finish with everything.
It started with some practice of previously learnt vocabulary while they coloured a house and its rooms. Then, the students were given some pieces of paper for them to stick on the correct room (most of them can read).
Finally, we played a game with a robot who was hiding on the poster we made on the first class: "Where's the robot?"

30th September
When I arrived they were finishing a story from the book "Cuentopos de Gulubú". The book has only one image and the teacher told me that she chose the book because at school, the book don't have so many images and the students have to rely on their imagination, so she wants to prepare them for that.
Some of the students were following the story very interested, others were listening but also playing with their hands or feet, others could not follow the story. The teacher told me that this last group were the youngest of the group, that it takes them more time to think in "abstract" concepts.
When they finished, they talked about the characters and their attitudes in this particular story. The teacher tried to make them think about the characters' appearance.
Also, they finished the task on the surnames' origins. Spain was the country with largest number of "coloured bricks", followed by Italy and France. Last were Portugal and Greece. The teacher told me, that this task was because they were dealing with immigration at the time of the "conventillos". The idea is to connect this last activity to an activity about Argentina's origins and the diversity that can be found here as 12th October is near
I sat with them and helped the teacher by calling the students' attention when they got distracted.
At 9.15 they started to have breakfast, we sang a song and I put some alcohol on their hands. Later, I helped Melisa (the teacher) to serve the food and drink. They were having tea, mik, water, cake and pizza.
It was a great day and I enjoyed it very much.

2nd October
I was extremely nervous. I arrived earlier to prepare the projector and the computer beforehand, as I wanted them to watch and listen to the Hello and Goodbye songs I had chosen for them.
When I arrived they were singing songs at the music room, so it was easier to prepare everything alone and moving tables to my benefit.
When they arrived, I greeted them and they put their bagpacks where they usually do (I didn't record this part! As it wasn't part of the "class"). Then, they sat on the floor and we started with our Hello song. First, they watched it and later we sang it without the clip. It was excellent!
Then, I tried to elicit some concepts they have been working on (conventillos, houses and the way people lived in the 1900s). They were very enthusiastic about it!
Later, I presented them a poster of a house in blank, it only had the spaces of the rooms of the house. Then, one student came to front and took one of the images of furniture that were on a bag, and the whole class had to decide where to put them. They had problems with the perspective the images had (I hadn't thought about that). However they quickly solved it.
When all the furniture was on its place, we stuck the names of the rooms for them to practice and remember. It was really easy for them!
Finally, we sang a Goodbye song. And as we watched the video, we sang and danced.
It was a nice day with them.

(They even started singing it when I entered to the room, some minutes before nine)
Then, I elicited the words we learnt the previous class and they remembered some of them (a week ago!).
Then, we played a game, they had to "go" to the room in pairs. As they passed to the front, they pointed and touched the correct room.
The second activity included some images of the different places in the house. In groups, they had to look at the images and decide which room was it. Then, I called them by room and they had to stick the image to the poster (The teacher asked me for the posters to show them on Friday in their parents/teacher meeting).
Last, we sang the Goodbye song (accidentally, two different programmes opened the song and it sounded badly, but I sang it and it was okay).

However, I made it.
The first activity was presenting a monster family, and the students had to take them one by one from their house. It was fun and the students were happy with the monsters. We played the game "Who's missing?" and they remembered every single monster! It was excellent!
Then, we watched a video in which the monsters were making different actions in different rooms of the house. They sang it with me and loved the song. They completed the names of the rooms and the actions the monsters performed.
Finally, we played "Simon says" with the actions and it was a success.
Though not feeling well, it was a good class!

Then, we worked with a sheet of paper, in which they had to choose where the member of the monster family was according to the action he or she was performing. Unfortunately, it took us more time than I had expected. I planned this activity for seven or ten minutes, and it took twenty minutes!
I read them Mr. Stretch's House, and they LOVED it! They wanted to hear it more than once, but there was no time, as I had two minutes to say Goodbye and put everything away.
So, the last activity I had planned is still pending for next class.
