Twitter Chat Reflection

When I tried to join the #engchat discussion, someone notified me that the chat was being combined with social studies. So, the hashtag was #engsschat. The fact that there were both English and social studies teachers participating in the chat made it really interesting because many of people's responses about writing purposes were similar! There seemed to be a consensus that having students write can be a great tool for checking understanding since writing requires writers to explain what they know. Although teachers agreed that having students write can be an effective for formative and summative assessments, many teachers talked about the importance of mixing writing assignments up, allowing opportunities for low-stakes (non-graded) writing, and creating writing prompts that promote reflection. In addition, many people shared different writing prompts and activities they do with their students to help get them excited about what they are writing. Personally, I felt like I took the most away from the discussion of reflective writing activities. Various teachers shared short writing activities that they do with their class daily, either at the beginning or end of class... I never considered asking students to reflect on their own productivity in class or their understanding of a certain idea/topic. These questions not only inform the teacher of what they he/she can do to help students, but also serve as a way for students to reflect on their learning.
