Getting fired wether you are the superior in charge of the firing or the employee being fired are usually pretty emotional and tense situations. What I have learned is that firing should be done discreetly and without emotional outbursts. In this gif Micheal Scott is doing a firing in front of the other employees which is a a joke in the TV show, but if taken seriously in a real workplace environment is a scare tactic for other employees and a bad thing to do.

Job training is a very important part of all jobs. It can range from hands on training to youtube videos you can watch from home. Sometimes employers make job training mandatory that is not relevant to your job, and sometimes do not give you proper training for the job you currently have. A proper functioning business should give department specific training.

Hiring good and hard-working employees is a big feat by itself. But sometimes keeping your employees working for you is even harder. Most employees quit for lack of recognition, being burned out from too much work, or environment. Posted above are some positive ways to retain employees.

Other than making employees feel valuable to the company performance evaluations are also great for other things too. There are a lot of different ways to go about performance evaluations such as a 360 approach (peer review), self review, and checklist review to name a few. Every employee reacts differently to each type of review. These reviews are also great for finding the highest performing and lowest performing employees if you are a manager that is not associating with employees on a daily basis.

Conflict is inevitable and it happens every day in every workplace. The only thing you can do to mitigate conflict is the way you deal with it and resolve it. We talked about a bunch of different conflict resolution situations over the course of this class, but in some further research for this project I found the CALM model. I think this is a very basic guide to dealing with conflict in the workplace, and it incorporates some ideas we learned in this class as well.

Job descriptions are important for employers and employees. Employers use job descriptions as either an attraction or deterrent by making sure that the interviewee meets all the education and qualification requirements needed for the job. Employees can use job descriptions to see what the job will be like, pay rate and benefits. A good job description is key for finding good employees. This meme is from my favorite movie of all time Office Space.

Interviews just like job descriptions are a very important tool to hire employees. By meeting the employee and sitting down with them you can understand them better and their reasons for wanting the job. The meme above showcases that some people just want the job for the money and do not actually care about the job. In class we learned about bias interviewing, this can range anywhere from not liking the way the person conducts themselves to not liking the color of their tie. The videos we watched in class taught us how to spot our unconscious bias.

Labor Laws were another topic we covered in this class that stood out to me. Up until my current job I have always worked under the table for less that minimum wage and over 40 hours a week. I thought that was completely fine until I started to understand labor laws. They are many different types of labor laws, but the one we focused on in this class was the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. This law made it so there was a federal minimum wage and everyone could earn a livable wage.

Safety was another topic we reviewed in this class. OSHA is the most common safety enforcer in the USA. There are multiple rules and regulations that a workplace must follow, and not just building requirements, but employee safety too. Fore example if you work with any chemical at all the employer must provide the SDS (safety data sheets) for every chemical you may come in contact with even if it is non toxic.

I know, another meme from The Office. As funny as this meme may be downsizing is serious. Even though it can be a helpful tool for companies to stay afloat or reorganize it can be very scary for the employees. Handling downsizing and mass layoffs as a manager is very difficult. In class we learned about who to choose to layoff when doing downsizing. Emotions tend to run high in these types of situations so it is good for managers to keep a level head and do what needs to be done for the benefit of the company.
