Ce rudimentaire objet sera un redoutable outil, parfait pour récolter les Diatomées qui dorment dans les cours d'eaux, lacs, étangs etc.D'abord, bien choisir son lieu de prélèvement. Les Diatomées "poussent" de préférence, là, où il y a toujours du Soleil, du matin au soir.Ayez sur vous : la fameuse brosse à dents, quelques flacons avec ses bouchons, et une petite cuvette en plastique.Prenez une belle pierre se trouvant dans l'eau bien sûr, l'aspect de cette pierre présentant une fine crôute glissante sous vos doigts (ou sous vos pieds si vous n'y prenez pas garde en traversant le rû...) c'est là où se trouvent ces bijoux...Ou une branche d'arbre immergée. Ou des tiges de roseaux...Donc, la pierre d'une main, au dessus de la cuvette, contenant très peu d'eau. De l'autre main, la brosse. Trempez celle ci dans l'eau de la cuvette, et effectuez un brossage de la pierre, par des mouvements circulaires, trempez et rebrossez, re trempez et re re brossez ! Elles peuvent vivre isolées ou en colonie, être libres ou fixées. Les formes pélagiques appartiennent au phytoplancton, les formes benthiques appartiennent au microphytobenthos. Les diatomées sont un constituant majeur du phytoplancton participant à 50% de la production primaire océanique globale2. Ces microalgues produisent à elles seules un quart de l'oxygène que nous respirons et jouent un rôle primordial dans la vie des écosystèmes marins, puisqu'elles sont à la base des réseaux alimentaires de nombreuses espèces.
