The first video we will look at is about a girl who lives in Malawi which is a country in Africa. Her family lives by a lake called Lake Malawi. She is 9 years old and spends her day going to school, playing with her siblings and her friends in the village and doing chores to help her family. Amazingly, she has never seen TV!

What is Kids In Other Countries?

KIDS IN OTHER COUNTRIES is a video project made by an American man called Arnold Hansen who is from Los Angeles. Arnold made these videos to help young people understand what life is like for kids living in other parts of the world. Arnold says that "I could not help but notice the children I met along the way. They were everywhere. Though poor, sometimes even destitute (this means they had no homes), they often were wondrously open and joyful. I marveled at their industry and creativeness, how they performed family chores without complaint, how they made their own toys. They seemed so happy with so little. I was struck with how different they were from most kids back home.

Linda and her sisters carry the dishes to the lake to wash them. They collect water from the well which is a deep hole in the ground. They walk a long way to the fields to gather cassava. The children help prepare the cassava for cooking. Cassava needs to be peeled then soaked and finally pounded to make flour. This is a very hard job.

In Linda's village there are no toy shops so all the children in the village make their own toys. The boys love football and make their own balls. They also make their own trucks from plastic bottles and bottle tops. The girls play hopscotch and with their soft toys. There is dancing and drumming. All children love to swim in the lake.

In Linda's village every meal is cooked over a fire and eaten outside on the ground. There is no electricity, no lights and no TV. There is no water in the house so the children need to walk to the well to collect water. The toilet is a hole in the ground. There are no beds so everyone sleeps on mats on the floor together.
