Ali is a 16 year old boy who lives with his mother and his little sister in Bed-Stuy,New York. Since Ali’s mother is a single mother, she works two jobs as a social worker and a retail worker to provide for her kids. Ali’s father does see the children but rarely due to terrible life choices. Ali describes the apartment besides his as the “Death trap” because he has neighbours that died/disappeared which is what lead him to his best friend. One day Ali was leaving his building until he sees a boy on the front step of his building. What is a awkward conversation leads into the beginning of their friendship. When Ali and Noodles were getting to know each other there is one thing that Noodles forgot to tell Ali that he has an older brother named Needles. Needles is a 18 year old boy and he has tortures. One day, Ali and Noodles found out that the richest kid in their neighbourhood will be hosting a party but they can’t go because of the fact that they are underage, so they had to bring Noodle. Ali’s dream is to get a career and move out of the city.In the book Ali described the Bed-Stuy as the city of “Gangs”. The character of Ali surrounds himself with people who are not only like him but won’t put him in a negative mind space. This is like the character of Tom in the book Bird box by Josh Malerman. Since Needles deals with Tortures, he gets a lot of attention from family and friends, which makes Noodles extremely jealous. When the richest kid in the neighbourhood is having a party, Noodles  pressured Ali and his brother to go because he wanted to show that he was independent and that he is cool. During this party not only did Noodles start to drink when he is underage but gotten into fights with people there. Ali noticed the change in behaviour from Noodles, which led into a verbal exchange from the both of them. “It had been a few days since everything went down, and when you're used to hanging out with a person every single day, a few days off can sometimes seem more like a few months.”(147,Reynolds).  From this quote, Ali and Noodle are no longer friends because Noodles was desperate to make new friends and look cool. A comparison that could be made is Don in the book birdbox. Don was trying so hard to be find out what the monsters looked like that he became naive.
