Some of Shakespeare's plays were published in quarto editions, beginning in 1594, and by 1598, his name had become a selling point and began to appear on the title pages. Shakespeare continued to act in his own and other plays after his success as a playwright. The 1616 edition of Ben Jonson's Works names him on the cast lists for "Every man in his humor" (1598) and "Sejanus his fall"(1603).

He may have noticed that the British theater scene was on the verge of falling into aristocracy, and with the amount of wealth accumulated over the years, it was enough for him to buy a house in his hometown and live his last day of life. 
Shakespeare died on 23 April 1616, at the age of 52. He died within a month of signing his will, a document which he begins by describing himself as being in "perfect health". No extant contemporary source explains how or why he died. 
Shakespeare was buried in the chancel of the Holy Trinity Church two days after his death.
