The Equity and Access Policy was not enacted until 2015 in South Orange-Maplewood school district. As late as the policy was enacted, it was good, right? Students today are still seeing segregation due to law changes especially when entering middle school. Money for this policy was put towards new facilities and not student's learning, there was rezoning of neighborhoods diminishing low-income students, and more.

We continue to see today, especially in West Virgina, re-zoning. Similar to the news stories under 'legal challenges' low-income families are being rezoned with less resources such as good education. This is where we continue to see segregation. The reality is there are predominate white schools and predominate minority schools, it is less often that we see schools with similar populations of races/ethnicities. Segregation is still happening in 2023.

"They" is a word I recently took out of my vocabulary. Who is they? "They" is often used in school systems when talking about students other than white, rich, English speaking students. ESL students are casted to other rooms to learn and are segregated from the general classrooms with out educating the other students on why. When educators teach cultural and linguistically diverse students, students can learn how to best engage and support one another together.
