I have chosen this 1960s Disney item of memorabilia of Mowgli, from The Jungle Book (1967). This is part of my wider fascination with what I call "brown protagonists", the imaging and centring of individuals of colour on screen. Brownness, or lack of it in film and TV representation remains a space for me to explore in my work - to think about marginalisation and the politics of representation.
I think I have always identified with this cartoonish representation of a South-Asian boy, whilst also acknowledging the limits of this problematic Disney representation.

After a few days I remembered this, which believe it or not is an old cast for making small almond biscuits. It was on the floor of an old building that was a bakery during the 16th century. I don't know if it's that old, but I also love the fact that it looks sort of like a fossil.

I’ve chosen this old punk band t-shirt of mine. This old t-shirt represents so much of me, while also reminding me to embrace and own everything that comprises my personality. Punk rock has been an important aspect of my life since I was a teenager, and I still try to incorporate punk ideals into my life and my work. It plays an important part in my perspective and curatorial practice, like being bold, playful, and critically pushing boundaries and taking risks. The character on the front of this t-shirt represents the lead singer of the band, Milo, who is a molecular biochemist, while at the same time punk rocker. This has always meant so much to me because Milo represented a person that I could relate to: an academic, nerd punk rocker. He always made me feel like it was ok to be a nerd and also love punk rock and be a little rebellious. So, this t-shirt truly does represent so many layers of who I am, but also reminds me to maintain my punk rock outlook and find ways to creatively incorporate it into my life and my curatorial practice.

I chose this house for a number of reasons: 1. As a toddler I used to draw a house in my drawings (a usual repetitive motif in young children's drawings). I feel quite familiar with the image of a house. 2. I strongly believe that a warm and comfy house gives us the resilience needed to be our authentic self in the outside world. 3. Apart from its literal meaning, home is where the heart is. When I feel stuck, lost or overwhelmed, I try to listen to and understand where my heart is. 4. It's a present from a very good friend!

Steven Appleby’s comic strip Loomis for the Guardian newspaper emotionally connects to me as it represents a real event in our lives that Steven put in the paper. It connects to my current practice being a private moment that became public. Steven gifted me the original artwork as a peace offering for my partner. My partner was a photographer then and didn’t cook, we lived apart, but I had keys. For safekeeping he stored his Macbook Pro at the top of the oven. I cooked a surprise dinner and having failed to remove the computer from the oven, successfully cooked his entire life’s work. It wasn’t backed up! In anguish I spent the night researching and found the guys who retrieved the hard-disc of the Apollo space shuttle’s computer when it caught fire. Miraculously they were 30mins down the road and managed to retrieve his life’s work. I reunited him with his work, along with this artwork and newspaper clipping. Over ten years on, this hangs proudly in our hallway.

There’s not 1 particular hammock but several of them, and the hammock in general as a meaningful object to me. The hammock tells me stories of who I am, both from the personal and cultural memory. I have countless memories of mainly love and play in hammocks. Games played with my siblings, loving time spent with my grandma. The hammock is also a symbol of my cultural heritage, of the Caribbean, of colonisation. And my fixation with hammocks also comes from my formation as an industrial designer, it is one of the oldest furnishing pieces we have and I insist its beautifully practical and brilliant.

It is not the most interesting story or the best written, but it is important to me. This book is also a reminder that sometimes important objects aren't necessarily "high brow"
