Beneatha is unique in a way that she is always open to trying new things and activities. Women during her time period were still thought to be more spiritually weaker, but Beneatha was very different. She had goals and dreams and was determined to find something that she could set her heart and mind on so that she can use that to live her life a good way. An example of this is when she is having a discussion about guys with Ruth and Mama, and she says, "Get over it? what are you talking about, Ruth? Listen, I'm going to be a doctor. I'm not worried about who I'm going to marry yet - if I ever get married." (pg. 50) She explains how she's not looking for a relationship right now and wants to focus on herself so she can become a doctor.

Besides being unique and outstanding, she is also outspoken and wise, which are two very big traits in an independent person. An example of this is when she speaks out to Mama about her belief in God. Beneatha says, "It's just that I get tired of Him getting credit for all the things the human race achieves through its own stubborn effort." She emphasizes how God has never done anything and never has anything to do with the things that happen in life. He is not an idea that she accepts. It is also the fact that she dislikes George for disliking her talking. George only cared about her looks, and Beneatha gets irritated. She tells Mama that he's a real fool. The fact she chooses brains over beauty says a lot about her character.

My thoughts on Beneatha are all very positive because of how strong and independent of a character she is. I admire her desire to want to become successful in the future. Women during her time period would stick to cooking or cleaning for someone, but she wants to go as far as becoming a doctor, which is a very high profession. She always tries to express herself in every way. She is outspoken about her opinions, which can get her in trouble, but she is wise, so she knows what she's talking about.

Beneatha is a very ambitious, fierce, and bright girl. For those reasons, I chose this painting by Connie Mobley Medina. The painting is of Rosie the Riveter, who was the face of the 'We Can Do It" poster. There are also splatters and splashes of color everywhere on the painting, which represent Beneatha's strong and ambitious traits because those traits make her stand out and seem bold. Rosie the Riveter is a very important piece in this because she's a woman and us showing strength in the painting. The fact that she represents that message of having the ability to do anything you set your mind to represents Beneatha's character very well.

‘You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.’

This piece is from the famous poem, "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou. I believe this describes Beneatha because it fits well with her whole life story and what kind of character she is. Beneatha represents a woman who possesses big dreams, has strong goals, and won't let anything get in the way of that. During one part of the, "Raisin in the Sun", she says she wants to become a doctor and won't let a guy get in the way of that goal first. She is determined in becoming successful first. Dspite what anyone says or does to her, she doesn't let it stop her. Beneatha also represents the rest of her family and all of their struggles. She refuses to let anything kill their dream.

Post 7 - Lyric Connection to Beneatha Younger

"Fight Song" is a song with such heavy and positive meaning that says no matter how hard times get, it doesn't mean that it's a bad life. We all have times in our lives where we think everything is going downhill and can never get back to our original happy self, but it's never true. Being a woman in the 1950s was very difficult because women were still thought of as weak. Beneatha was so determined to change that. She had big goals and dreams to accomplish when she was older and didn't let any of the tough experiences she went through break her down.

A significant theme that, "A Raisin in the Sun" possesses is that you should persevere through all the bad times and don't let it break you. Life goes on. Things will always go wrong, but you should never let it break you. An example of this is when the Younger Family's money gets taken and everyone feels crestfallen about it. When Lindner offers them a good amount of money to move out, Walter says no because of how much their family worked toward that dream. He says, "And we have decided to move into our house because my father - my father - he earned it for us brick by brick." This quote explains that if you ever feel like giving up, stop and think about all the progress you've made first. I believe it's important to know how much you went through to get to a certain point in life because that realization will hit you back into the right mindset again. Don't throw away all your work because of one thing. Let it bounce you back into something better. The Youngers have proved time and time again that you shouldn't let tough situations shatter your progress and relationships. They work together as a family to get things done and build each other up so none of them fall. Although they can almost give into pressure, they always find themselves back to their determined mindset again.
