SELF HEALING JOURNEY AND SHOWING EMOTIONAL GROWTH, AND HOW DIFFERENT PEOPLE REACT TO THE JOURNEY

Emotional healing happens in seven stages: recognizing, accepting, exploring, understanding, releasing, reconnecting, and transforming their lives.
Throughout the piece, I am going to show the journey of emotionally healing with the use of the seven steps, showing emotional growth in different people.
The material represents the the journey .

I want the journey to be shown metaphorically on an actual bridge to show a journey going from one side to another.

Today I picked out my location, the location I picked was a place called new mills. New mills has a beautiful nature park which has a big bridge that you walk on to get across a river. I decided that I could use this to link to my theme by the dancers making their way across the bridge as part of their journey. I also picked New Mills because it feels very organic and wholesome so I wanted that to link to my theme. I did not struggle picking my location because I knew what I wanted it to look like and be surrounded by.

Today I met up with my videographer and I was able to share my ideas and visuals with her. I explained my whole idea to her and we started to think of different ways we could use the camera so I can choreograph using the camera and different angles. We came up with close shots to show details of the material and intricate movements, wide shots to show the whole visual in one including the surrounding location and birds eye view to show different point of views. I found this really beneficial because I can now work around choreographing with those angles and have the dancers practice with the angles.

In todays rehearsal process, I went into the studio and successfully choreographed the first song of my project. I found choreographing to the first song easy and the whole process went fluent because I thought of movements that linked to the stages of recognising and accepting. I used a lot of hand and arm choreography catching/ grabbing the head to show the story that the body needs to heal and the mind is recognising and accepting that. After choreographing, I decided to go back through and see where I could develop the movement more by using the different formations that the dancers will be in. Used repetition and cannon to show starting the journey is not always easy and can take a few times to go through with it. The next rehearsal I will have will be with the dancers so I can see it clearly on them.

EXPLORING AND UNDERSTANDING

Today, I had my first official rehearsal with the dancers that are in my major project. However, due to different time availability the rehearsal was later than expected. In the rehearsal, I taught the dancers the first section of the piece which is "Rise". Their pick up was really good to work with and any correction I gave them they applied it straight away. We ended up completing the formation of the first section and then filmed the whole section using a phone. With the phone, I videoed the different camera angles that I wanted. Using this I then edited a rough draft of what I wanted the first section to look like. I am happy with the outcome of this rehearsal, even though it was later than planned. Next rehearsal, I want to teach and film the second section which is "Self" to the dancers.

In my second rehearsal with the dancers, I focused more on teaching and developing the second section which is "Self". This section is about exploring, understanding and releasing, for this reason, I did not focus on formations because I want it to be organic and when the dancers are exploring with the movement I have gave to them, I want them to explore with that and feel natural wherever they stop. The dancers are easy to work with because their retention is excellent, we went through the 1st section from the last rehearsal and they remembered every single correction I gave them. Teaching this section to them was an easy process because the movements where I needed them to feel more, I told them and they added it onto the movement. In the next rehearsal, I want to finish off the last section and start to clean and develop where it needs to be.

In todays rehearsal, I decided to try out something different. I taught the cast the choreography and explained the intention for last section and how it is all about transforming and reconnecting with yourself at the end of the journey. When teaching the choreography, I didn't do formations because I wanted to have more natural and organic choices within the video so it was different every time to show different reactions. I tried it out with the cast and asked how it felt to move to wherever they want. They explained that it feels more free and lets them complete the phrase tranquil. The cast understood the way I wanted to portray this section and by the end of the rehearsal it looked exactly how I wanted it to be. I gave them 3 different phrases to remember and one at a time I shouted out a number and their name to do it individually. I wrote down the order to then proceed and develop this order.

Today I decided to do a last minute rehearsal just to clean my piece and make sure every section is how I want it to look. The dancers through the whole process was amazing to work with and took on every correction so through this rehearsal it was ran smoothly. I explained that I just need more feeling within the movements and we talked back over the piece about the different sections. After we did this, they performed each section at a time and there was a big different in the way they were moving. We also had a costume run within this rehearsal, I was worried at first because this was the first costume rehearsal we have had. However, the material was perfect to move in and we chose where we could pin it to the white clothing underneath. Im glad I did a last minute rehearsal because I feel more calm and relaxed, ready to film in 2 days.

Today, we went to Charlton park to film my project, it was a last minute change of location due to financial issues. However, I feel like this location worked out much better then the other planned location. The whole afternoon was a very good atmosphere and experience, the weather was beautiful because the sun was out and there was a little wind which I wanted anyway for the material to be swaying naturally. My videographer was easy to work with as well because of the meeting we had where we planned out the different ways we could film the different sections. The park was massive so we were able to walk around and spot different locations of where the different sections would fit. I found enclosed spaces for the first section then became more open as we walked along.

Today, I spent the whole day editing my film. At first I found it hard because I haven't had much experience editing, however as I went on through the film it got much easier. All the footage that we took was amazing so it ran so smoothly just to fit all the sections together. I am extremely happy with the way it has turned out.

Critical Reflection

Looking back on the whole process, I am happy with the outcome of my piece however there is some things I would change within the process to develop my filmed piece. Within the rehearsal process, I wish I had a few more rehearsal just to develop the different phrases with my cast. They did it beautifully but for myself choreographically, I feel like I could of explored more within different cannons and unisons to show the different journeys in a healing journey. A positive from the process is how it went smooth, from the first meeting with my videographer to the filming date. Timing worked out well for rehearsals and the filming date. One problem that I came across was having to set a different location 2 days before filming, this was because of financial issues and not being able to afford train fares. I then decided to search different places within Greater Manchester so travel was not as expensive. I found a place in Chorlton which is 20 minutes outside of Greater Manchester. I was slightly worried because I had never been there so I didn't know what to expect it to look like as a whole. However, when we got there is was very spacious and there was different locations that stood out to me for the different sections. After our year 3 major project event I had some feedback from peers that watched my video, my peers said the video was beautiful and there some lovely moments captured in the different sections. They also explained that they could see the narrative clearly by the way I choreographed with the material on the cast.
