As stated by the National Center For Health Research, "Violent video games can also desensitize people to seeing aggressive behavior and decrease prosocial behaviors such as helping another person and feeling empathy (the ability to understand others)."

In this study, 60% of middle school boys and 40% of middle school girls were shown to have hit or beaten up someone after playing at least one M-rated game. This is a large difference between the 39% of boys and 14% of girls who have not played an M-rated game.

While there ARE many other factors that play a role in the aggravation levels of a child, such as mental illnesses, family history, and environmental factors, video game violence is still an exposure that adds onto the list that causes aggression. While many kids who do play violent video games won't pick up a gun and commit mass murder, they are exposed to the thoughts of beating a person up or hurting someone, etc. Once these thoughts build up, they may act out.
