Worked with the council in Sheffield to reduce litter using 'purrit in bin' campaign

“It’s been an absolute pleasure creating these designs for Sheffield City Council, to help spread the important message about people using bins to get rid of their rubbish.

I hope it makes a real difference and gets people thinking about chucking their litter in the right place.”

Sheffield City Council has teamed up with artist, Luke Horton to encourage people visiting our gorgeous parks and green spaces to take their litter home.

Every summer we have to employ extra staff and put additional bins in place to tackle the litter problem left in our parks. This year, Sheffield residents and visitors to our parks are being asked to do their bit by taking rubbish home and recycling if possible.

In a bid to encourage participation, there will also be an online competition* to win ‘tek it ome’ tote bags throughout August.

Improve the wildlife

Make the Sheffield canals a 'hub' e.g. the regentrificatoin of the London Canal e.g. Coal Drops Yard/ Granary Square

Promote the cleaning up of Sheffield's canal as it has been a struggle to find clean water for recreational use

Sustainability, bird and animal life and increasing biodiversity and community, make the area breath a new life

Idea... promote a festival/ launch event/ campaign to propose the idea

Highlight the history of Sheffield, celebrate the culture and pride of the city

Make it as authentically Sheffield as possible using slang and colloquial terms in the branding

We have over 150 miles of rivers and streams in Sheffield and we want to deliver sustainable regeneration for future generations. To achieve this, we need to involve everyone who is able to help.

By 2022, we want our rivers to become central to Sheffield being an attractive, competitive and sustainable city, rich in wildlife and offering a wonderful quality of life to residents, workers and visitors.

Ways of Water explores local water infrastructures, from historic wells to expansive reservoirs across sites in Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

The exhibition follows the historic and contemporary implications of the Sheffield cholera epidemic of 1832, which emerged because of unsanitary water conditions.

Water is central to human and planetary survival. As a crucial life-sustaining element for every living organism, it needs maintenance and care, as does remembrance. This exhibition highlights these themes and invites visitors to consider their relationship to water, health, memory and loss on both a local and global scale.

The evidence from the last 50 years shows that on land and in freshwater, significant and ongoing changes in the way we manage our land for agriculture, and the effects of climate change, are having the biggest impacts on our wildlife.

Across the UK species studied have declined on average by 19% since 1970.

Nearly one in six species are threatened with extinction from Great Britain

151 of 10,008 species assessed have already become extinct since 1500

In Northern Ireland, 12% of assessed species were at risk of extinction

Invertebrates such as insects, spiders and millipedes have been found, on average, in 13% fewer places now than in 1970.

THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE REPORT ON THE UK’S CURRENT BIODIVERSITY

State of Nature uses the latest and best data from biological monitoring and recording schemes, collated by the incredible work of thousands of skilled people, most of whom are volunteers, to provide a benchmark for the status of our wildlife.

The next UK Government must work across departments to put nature into recovery by protecting and restoring at least 30% of land and sea for nature by 2030. Species like the long lost Beaver should return to Sheffield and Rotherham, and a nature recovery network should join up wild places, from our neighbourhoods to the countryside.

End river pollution. No river in Sheffield and Rotherham is in good overall condition. By 2030, nutrient pollution from farming, sewage and development must be halved, and more wetlands should be created to tackle flood and drought.

Wildlife friendly farming. Farmers must be supported and incentivised to help wildlife recover by creating more space for nature, significantly reducing pollution, and halving harm from pesticides by 2030. The budget for nature-friendly farming should increase to at least £4.4 billion a year.

Healthy communities. Recent analysis found that for every £1 invested in this programme there is £1.19 of additional benefit in terms of reduced costs to the NHS. The next UK Government must support the creation of more greenspace in neighbourhoods, fund and integrate green prescribing into community-based health services and enable all children to access outdoor learning opportunities.

Restore natural habitats in order to tackle the climate emergency. Nature can make a huge contribution to achieving net-zero targets if habitats are restored because peatlands, woodlands, and other wild places store carbon.
