There is a great variety of plants, although it is a small island. The cedar, bushes, schinn dominate and ammophilous vegetation also The cedar tree of Chrysis is unique for the Greece territory. There are century-old trees with average age from 200 to 300 years. Cedars have a root system that grows at least twice their height! Apart from their large roots, a vast number of very thin roots form a dense grid that holds the sand. The number of plant species of Chrysis is very large in relation to its area and corresponds to 1/20 of Cretan flora! These species, which exist on the island, either are rare for the coasts of southern Europe or for the whole world.

The area is located at the central-east part of Crete and is characterized by a belt of mountains, Dikti (altitude 2148 m, one of the three principal mountains of Crete),. There is the biggest plateau of Crete, Lasithi (at 800 m altitude). The biggets part of the site is covered by large rugged mountains and gorges.
The following elements comprise the ecological quality and importance of the site: 1) A great variety of habitat types, mostly well conserved: Quercus coccifera forests (it is noteworthy that the tree form of Quercus coccifera is unusual outside Crete and Peloponnese); a Quercus ilex forest, the unique large forest of the species in Crete (approximately 700 ha); Pinr forest (Pinus brutia); low-, mid- and high-elevation phryganas; and a great number of caves. 2) Its flora is extremely rich in common species and in rare and vulnerable endemic species, mostly cretan; moreover, some of them are stenoendemics, exclusively found in the site or in the mountains of Crete. Alyssum lasithicum, Cirsium creticum ssp. dictaeum, Galium incanum ssp. creticum, Silene thessalonica ssp. dictaea, Tragopogon lassithicus, Inula candida ssp. decalvans (=Inula pseudolimonella), Scabiosa minoana ssp. minoana (=Lomelosia minoana ssp. minoana), Astragalus nummularius, and Silene multicaulis ssp. cretica are endemic to the site.; Asplenium creticum, Hypochoeris tenuiflora, Origanum microphyllum, Cuscuta atrans, Silene andri-jovis, Astragalus idaeus, Geocarium creticum, and Epipactis cretica are endemic to the mountains of Crete. 3) The plateau of Lassithi produces the majority of Crete's potato crops. It also has a unique in Crete old venetian drainage system and there are hundreds of windmillds used as water pumps and composing a rare aesthetic landscape.

Hippocrates, the father of Medicine, writes about the therapeutic gynecological and other properties of the plant. He used to use it for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions, ulcerations and stroke.
Τhe father of pharmacology, Dioskouridis (77 AD), says that when the plant is swallowed, it ejects the dead embryos. Still, it emphasizes that the scent of the plant removes insects and reptiles.
Since antiquity, it has still been known that the property, which had mainly the tea of the plant, has caused erotic excitement and desire, as evidenced by the many related paintings that have been found at times in many ancient vessels during the excavations.
The chemical composition of Dictamus has been researched by [Daferera et al. 2000] and [Skoula et al. 1999].
One of the most important actions of the plant, which has been studied extensively, is its antioxidant action [Lionis et al. 1998].
Antimicrobial activity
Numerous studies have been carried out to investigate the antimicrobial action of Origanum dictamnus.
One of these [Sivropoulou et al. 1996] examines the effect of the presence of the plant's essential oil on the development of eight different Gram positive and negative bacterial clones.
Its root as cream finds use against saliva, while its juice is consumed in wine to cure snake bites [www.iama.gr].
Well-known also it is that It was used to help women to give birth more easily and quickly (the interest-earners drank some wild dittany beverages), and it was also used as an abortionist [Prineas et al. 1983, Bayeus 1986, Ganiatsas 1966, Gunther 1968].
