The hype for the book did not match the content. I think the author was trying too hard to make the story something worth reading by keeping many things a mystery, but to me it was frustrating. Did we ever really find out what "lifted" meant? Did the Sun actually grant Klara's prayer, or was it coincidence?
I think the main message was that AI robots can understand the individual, but we will never replicate the community. Klara could have been continued, but the love from Rick, her mother, her father, cannot be programmed.

I’m having a hard time using this on my phone because I’m terrible with tech, but here’s the link to a summary. This book was exciting and suspenseful while also having a cool atmosphere throughout and some travel sprinkled in… I gave it a 5/5 stars on goodreads which is pretty rare for me 🤓
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/54981009

-Whitney

2.5/5 Stars from me for Klara & the Sun

I felt "hooked" at different points in the book, but felt like the ending was too prompt and unresolved for my personal taste. I felt that as things started moving in the book we would get some answers and I still felt in the dark about a couple of things. I wanted more development about lifted vs non-lifted children. More development on Paul and his life and how people like him were atypical to the culture. I felt like Rick & Josie's relationship was a strong focus in the first part of the book and how it ended seemed abrupt to me. I wasn't necessarily wanting them to marry, but their friendship drift was very fast. I wish we knew more about what Helen saw in the field...I have more ha, but I'll stop there.

Something I kind of took away from the story though:
Throughout the whole book there is this pollution machine and Klara is worried about it putting pollution out into the air, etc. She prays to the sun about how to help Jose and feels that destroying the machine will heal Jose. Then when she's with Paul she gives up some of her fluid (a sacrificial act for Josie) to try and destroy the machine. Of course we know there are more pollutants, etc.
This reminded me that sometimes that I can be like Klara. I have this idea and have this "solution" to a problem and I just know it's going to work. And I sacrificially give time, money, energy to this solution and yes, it helps, but I disregard the idea of bringing other people to the problem too. I think that I can just fix it by myself (ie she didn't want Rick's help). Of course I don't think Klara was being selfish going to the sun without Rick, but she kept trying to fix it herself and when Josie finally did get better it's because she let the sun into the room. And everyone was there-Klara, Rick, Josie, her mom, etc. The secrecy of going to the sun was over and she just let the sun in.

Natalie
