This had allegedly contributed to Carter's defeat by Reagan in the presidential election of 1980.

Chernobyl Disaster (1986)

A chemical explosion occurred at the Chernobyl plant on April 26, 1986 Ukraine. This was caused by a surge when operators were testing the electrical control system during a routine shutdown.

A little under 5 million people had faced radiation fallout (or at least national affects), in locations spanning Europe and North Asia.

The disaster costed 235 billion dollars to make up damages.

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill in Alaska (1989)

It took four years to clean up damages, and about 23,000 gallons still remain to this day.

Exxon had to pay 75% of the final damage ruling, as well as settling it with a criminal plea agreement, criminal restitution, and a civil settlement.

The Iran Contra Affair was a political scandal that involved Ronald Reagan administration Senior officials having had secret relations and facilitating to the sale of arms to Iran.

The sales were illegal due to the arms embargo that Iran had been in.

Documents about the sales with Iran were not given by Reagan administration members, but a investigation eventually concluded that Ronald Reagan knew of the illegal sales.
