Alabama governor George Wallace personally attempts to block African American students from registering at the University. Specifically at the Little Rock Central High School.

Effect: This effected President John F. Kennedy to direct military personnel to help the students get into the school.

December 1955

Montgomery Bus boycott launched after Rosa Parks was arrested. This caused many other protests and even the Freedom Riders.

Cause: Rosa Parks sitting in a section of the bus and was told to move into the back so a white man could sit there. She would refuse and get arrested which sparked the Montogomery Bus boycott.

February 1960

Sit-in protest - movement begins at a Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C. and spreads to the nation.

Effect: This act of civil disobedience helped towards the Civil Rights Movement.

April 3 - May 10 1963

Police arrest Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other ministers demonstrating in Birmingham Alabama and then turn fire hoses and police dogs on the marchers.

Cause: MLK was arrested for leading non-violent/peaceful protests in Birmingham.

August 28, 1963

March on Washington. King’s “I Have a Dream” Speech. Said at the Lincoln Memorial. One of the most memorable lines were "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

Effect: Propelled the passing of the Civil Rights Bill by lots.

July 2, 1964

President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964. A few months after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Effect: They would continue protest for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

February 21, 1965

Civil Rights leader Malcolm X is murdered when preparing for the Organization of Afro-American Unit. Died to multiple gunshot wounds.

Effect: His death had an impact on the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement.

August 6, 1965

President Johnson signs the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This overcame the legal/local barriers that prevented African Americans of voting.

Connection: The Selma to Montogomery March had a great influence on the signing of the Voting Rights Act.

April 4, 1968

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated in Memphis Tennessee by James Earl Ray.

Effect: The death of Mark Luther King Jr. would anger black Americans and cause national mourning. It would also help for other bills like equal housing bill and would be a mark in history of the most prominent leaders of the Civil Rights Movement.
