Tuberculosis commonly attacks the lungs but can attack other parts .  This bacterium is spread through the air from one person to another. When a person with active TB has a cough, sneezes, or sings anyone close by can be infected with TB then as well. Tuberculosis is spread through droplets.  When people breathe in the mycobacterium tuberculosis it settles in the lungs and then moves to other parts of the body if not treated.  Presence of the TB bacterium in active stage will cause symptoms such as a cough that last 3 weeks or more, weight loss, fatigue, fever, night sweats, chills, and chest pain or pain when breathing. If tuberculosis is suspected there are test that are run first a Mantoux skin test(TB skin test), sputum culture , and a chest x-ray to visually see the tuberculosis in the lungs. After, test are run and it has been confirmed that the mycobacterium is present. Immediate treatment with the medications Isoniazid, Rifampin, Ethambutol, and Pyrazinamide are prescribed.  It takes at least 6 to 12 months for the medications to kill all the bacterium . It is important that the medications prescribed be completed fully even if the symptoms start to disappear, because symptoms can be gone but the virus could still be alive in the body. There are a few things that can be done to prevent the spread of the mycobacterium. Always cover your mouth with tissue when coughing or sneezing, wash hands after coughing and sneezing, avoid visiting or being too close to anyone with active TB.  People who have a higher risk of contracting tuberculosis are children, HIV patients, elderly, migrants, prisoners, drug abusers, and diabetics. They should take extra precautions to prevent from getting the mycobacterium tuberculosis.
