I was reminded of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species while reading through Life Ascending by Nick Lane. Both books supported claims and theories proving the basis of evolution by means of natural selection. An obvious difference I did see, however, was the lack of advanced technology for scientific purposes in Darwin's Origin of Species. While Darwin effectively argued and supported his theory regarding evolutionary changes, he had to rely off of tracking behavioral habits and comparing them to other species in areas of geographical isolation. Nick Lane describes the structural composition of DNA molecules in various species, which is not a resource Darwin was able to take advantage of. Ultimately, Life Ascending did a wonderful job at supporting Darwin's claims with further evidence.

If this book were to continue for one more chapter and into the future, I predict that human beings would have adapted to their environment much differently and drastically vary in appearance compared to the current human beings. Based off of speculation and prior evolutionary cycles, humans definitely will continue to evolve. Many foresee the evolutionary future of Homo sapiens as one that merges into a single and multicultural ethnic group, as humans may grow to be more like one another, regardless of geographical location. Hypotheses like these would be interesting to see incorporated into a book like Life Ascending. However, any substantial changes cannot happen quick enough to occur during our lifetimes.

As previously stated in the audio recording, I rated this book a 9 out of 10. I gave the book this rating because it effectively addressed all modes of evolutionary adaptation and established several hypotheses that got my mind turning. For example, Nick Lane suggested that photosynthesis is essentially what prevents the oceans from drying up due to retaining the light waves from ultraviolet radiation, which have been known to split up hydrogen and oxygen. Hypotheses like these allow me to think deeper than just the facts provided in the book, which I really enjoyed. I also found this book easier to follow than others like Origin of Species, which I appreciated, as well.
