How Does Media Negatively Portray Mental Illness?

"Young people aren't great at separating fiction from reality, that gets even harder when struggling with suicidal thoughts."

Since 13 Reasons Why is narrated by Hannah Baker, the victim, the show removes the finality of death. It's very important to be careful about things like that because a fragmented mind could interpret death as a temporary effect, even if whoever stays dead.
-Simon

What Is The Line Between Awareness And Romanticizing?

"While it's important to talk about these kinds of topics, we need to be mindful of how we discuss them."

Awareness is a noble goal, but if done incorrectly it can become a 13 year old girl's sad Instagram edit, or worse, her suicide note. Sadly, just because it was done by a person with experience with mental illness doesn't mean it was done right. Certain imagery could trigger a mental break and be very harmful to an unstable mind.
-Simon

How Does 'Flowery Language' Make Mental Health Seem Cool Or Pretty?

"Misery loves company and sometimes a shared sadness can be seen as a way to fit in. Teenage girls are the most susceptible to these images and messages."

'Flowery Language' may be a confusing term, but it's just used to describe the sort of wistful words that make bad things seem okay. They are used in poems about self-harm and drawings of singular eyes crying, or pictures of gory 'sad bois' with colorful band-aids covering their wrists instead of the much drearier gause and ace bandage treatment most cutters get. The flowery language isn't for those trying to get better, it's justification for those who want to be worse.
-Simon

How Does Removing Stigma Become Romanticizing?

"While mental illness isn’t something people should be scared of, it also isn’t something that people should aspire to have."

There's been a huge movement to get people to talk about their mental illnesses and share their struggles with being atypical. That movement had some unfortunate effects, many have started to see being mentally ill in a different light, a harmful light. Instead of mental illness becoming something we don't need to be afraid of, it has become something for girls to say is art and that it's beautiful. If you were to look in a depression or mental illness tag, instead of finding support to get help you'd find cutting playlists. Talking about mental illness is important, fetishizing it is harmful. Instead, when people are looking for help in a community of people who share their experiences, they find teen girls telling them that self-harm isn't bad and that their scars are beautiful.
-Simon

You don’t have Generalized Anxiety Disorder because you get nervous for your final calculus exam. Skipping a meal doesn’t make you anorexic, and being organized doesn’t mean you have OCD."

This quote is useful in showing the mentality of teens who think mental illness is cool. It can help show the dangers of self-diagnosis done by people who think that depression is a new trend, and how this can prevent from getting help if you need it. If every kid is crying wolf, then you cant notice the ones who are crying for help.
-Simon

How Media Can Portray Mental Illness Correctly?

"When portraying mental illness and psychotherapy, the media tends to get it wrong — a lot — which has far-reaching results. Inaccurate depictions fuel stigma and may prevent people from seeking help."
"The realities of a disease like schizophrenia are so harrowing, and its effects on its victims and the people close to them so devastating, that we are eager for deeper meanings and happy endings. But if we sometimes need comforting fantasies about mental illness, we also need movies like Tim McCann's ''Revolution No. 9,'' an unadorned, unsparing chronicle of a young man's descent into a nightmare of delusion, paranoia, and self-destructive behavior."

One of the best portrayals of mental illness in media is Bojack Horseman. The writers did a wonderful job of showing how depression can affect someone. In the show, you see how chaotic and rude and entirely human each and every character is. Bojack, the main character, battles with depression and alcoholism, and instead of the show giving into its comedic nature, it takes the topic very seriously. It is one of the best shows I've seen that portrays mental illness on such a broad scale, it shows depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress syndrome, love, hate, and multi-dimensional characters.
Media can be a wonderful tool to help remove the stigma against the mentally ill. It can show that not every person who's atypical is someone who's one step away from a murderous rampage and needs to be locked up in a padded cell with a straight jacket. Sadly, some people still think crazy and mentally ill are synonymous, and that's the kind of harmful thinking that specific shows can push if they aren't careful.
Many people could benefit from going to therapy, mentally ill or not, but most are afraid to go because media can depict therapists and those who go to them as nuts. Media can depict therapists as these useless people who can't fix anything, because after seeing therapists like Dr. Phil, who specializes in quick fixes and blanket statements, people end up thinking that therapists who are slowly rebuilding the person up are actually ineffective and pointless.
-Simon
