Prince Albert National Park is an example of a coniferous forest in Canada. The temperature year round ranges from 50º-68ºF and gets around 12-35 inches of rainfall per year. Coniferous forests contain conifer trees and evergreens such as spruces, pines, and firs. Coniferous trees produce cones and needles, and evergreen means that they don’t lose their needles in the winter. Pine trees in this area have a sloped shape downwards to help shed snow as well as shallow rot systems to survive the cold weather. Typical animals seen in a coniferous forest are beavers, moose, wolves, and lynxes. Humans have impacted the coniferous forest in ways such as deforestation, logging, and clear cutting.

New England, USA is filled with what is called a temperate deciduous biome. The temperature rages from 22º-86ºF(on average) and gets 30-59 inches of rainfall per year. Trees that’s leaves change color and fall off in the winter are very common here. Some examples are oaks and maples. Various shrubs and perennials can also be found in the temperate deciduous. Animals seen in this biome are black bears, racons, birds, deer, and foxes. Humans have impacted this biome by farming, mining, hunting, and logging. These all put the temperate deciduous’ biodiversity at risk.

The Sonoran Desert is an example of a desert biome with yearly temperatures ranging from 25º-100ºF and about 10 inches of rainfall per year. Deserts usually have perennials as well as annuals completing a life cycle in weeks. A very famous form of vegetation found in the desert is a cactus. Animals found in a desert can be anything from a kangaroo rat and a lizard to a camel or fox. Animals in the desert have an absence of sweat glands and concentration to survive the heat. Lastly, humans grazing of animals and firewood gathering have harmed desert biodiversity.

Australia is filled with many savannas and grasslands with an anual temperature of 4º-86ºF and 20-35 inches of rain per year. Grasslands consist of grasses such as prairie clover, salvia, wheat, and barley). Animals found here are prairie dogs, pronghorns, coyotes, and gazelles. Many of these animals are very fast and/or have camouflage abilities to hide from predators. Recent urban development in grasslands put it’s biodiversity at a great risk.

Guanacaste, Costa Rica is home to many beautiful beaches, rainforests, and jungles. The yearly temperature is 70º-95ºF with 80-400 inches of rain. Typical vegetation in the air forest are ferns, lichens, orchids, and mosses. Animals found here are frogs, monkeys, green anaconda, and sloths. (I got to see a wild monkey!). Trees in the rainforest have lianas, or roots that climb out of the ground to reach sunlight. Logging and wildfires as well as urban development hurt the beautiful biodiversity of these locations.

The Namib-Naukluft National Park in Africa is a shrubland/ savanna where temperatures range from 30º-100ºF with 200-1,000 mm of rain per year. Shrub lands, like their name, have grass, shrubs, and short plants. Small leaves on plants limit water loss and thorns stop grazing. Animals found here are coyotes, birds, bobcats, and various rodents. Similar to other biomes, human development puts biodiversity at risk.

Contradictory to the name, Greenland is filled with cold tundras usually around the border. Tundras range from 40º-60º and get 6-1- inches of rain per year. Tundras contain little trees, shrubs, lichens, and moss. Animals here are polar bears, musk oxen, arctic foxes, and the snowy owl. Many animals in the tundra have warm coats and hibernate to survive the winter. Oil, gas, and mining put the tundra’s biodiversity at risk.
