This article talks about the problem of gender expectations and how negative generalizations about gender limit opportunities to explore different aspects of personalities. This relates to R+J and TFIOS because both Augustus and Romeo are forced onto roles of stereotypical men, unable to express sorrow and vulnerability.

This article describes how blind family loyalty can actually lead to problems in the family because it occurs unconsciously. This relates to R+J and TFIOS because all 4 main characters of the book have blind family loyalty. Romeo and Juliet hate each others’ family just because their families tell them to hate them, which ends up causing problems later on in the play. Augustus and Hazel both are prioritizing their family and not themselves in order to not cause their parents trouble, and does this unconsciously, not knowing that it is actually harming themselves.

This article talks about how separating people based on gender have been normalized and are being done unconsciously. Women are generally treated as “weaker” since birth and are raised to be more kind and soft spoken. This can be shown by Juliet from Romeo and Juliet and Hazel from The Fault in Our Stars because both characters appear shy, smart, and a little insecure about themselves. Only after Romeo and Augustus start talking to them more, do they become more open and confident.

This article explains how adolescent brain development leads to more impulsivity and risk taking. In R&J, Juliet is very impulsive in both marrying and dying for Romeo, while Haze, from TFIOS is impulsive in giving up her feelings and needs for Augustus to protect him (as well as to keep her family happy).

Both these articles show that women (teen girls to mothers) often carry the bigger mental load and sacrifice their own health for the family.

In R&J, we see Juliet only “dating” to marry and even accepting her father’s proposal to find her a man that would keep the family name. Lady Capulet and Nurse also wish to support the family name. In TFIOS, Hazel primarily lives her life to please her parents and help her family stay strong. Her mother is also the only one who understands Hazel’s conditions and gives up work and a social life to help her child.
